You dial-up users, do yourself a favour and get a registerable copy of Windows 98 so you can get updates from Microsoft. All the midi software works fine, the drivers are availible, and there's no Messenger Service pop-ups! Plus the thing shuts down straight away. Sweet.

On Windows 98, I can get software to work properly, like the Yamaha CBX driver that interfaces with my QY100 on the serial port. Plus no conflict with the PCMCIA modem.

So why use XP anyway if you're not networking!?

See More: Yay for Windows 98!?

It's always good to let Microsoft work out about a year to two worth of bugs before buying their systems as far as I'm concerned. They tend to ship out their products and then go "OOPS, Got to fix that". It would really be nice to get a system without so many bugs in it but oh well. I know lots of guys who still use DOS for their midi files on stage because it's so incredibly reliable. For me, Win98se works just fine.

Depends on what you're using your machine for...
I could never get the uptimes and stability I needed using msdos based OS like 98.

For me nt-based WIN was a good thing (when I'm not using linux that is...)

    agreed

Yes, I have had the odd crash when I've got too confident and tried to shut down immediately after closing a program!

Is there good midi software availible for Linux? I have never learnt to use it myself.

Also, since you are Admin, would you consider a seperate category of files / posts relating to Yahama XG midis? I have had no joy with Yahoo! XG groups, which seem to have expired! Also on middibuddy, you can't search for "XG" because its less than 3 characters! I'm sure there must be other Yam-Heads who would appreciate this.

    Cheers alot, Ben

I love XP but I have a 98 machine too.
I have some hardware that's not XP compatible - such as my capture card, and I hate that, but overall - XP is great.

XP has too much useless crap and the design looks like it was created by someone from Playskool
