48 may be the RW speed, there are three R, RW and read

There are a lot of factors governing write speed, whatever burner program you use analyses the disk media, files, HDD speed etc and sets the speed to optimal.

Had the same thing happen to me... But the blank CD I had are only rated at 48X... Oh well still burns 'em.

I have consistently successfully burned 16x CD-R's at 52x without any errors. I do not know the reason behind the low maximum speeds they etch on CD-R's.
