The arrival of BlackBerry Messenger on the iOS and Android platforms has been confirmed many months ago by the company's CEO Thorsten Heins. Earlier this summer, the man in charge announced that the app / service will step out of the BlackBerry ecosystem and land on iOS and Android by the end of the summer. After many leaks, rumors and bizarre launch dates announced by companies other than BlackBerry (including Samsung), the Canadian manufacturer has now finally sealed the deal and set the launch date of BBM in stone.

That being said, Android users will be able to get the app starting with September 21st. iOS users will then have the option to do the same, on September 22nd.

As to what you can expect from BBM assuming that you're not familiar with the concept behind it, BlackBerry Messenger is a social / chat service / app that has been available for BlackBerry users exclusively. The application will be cross-platform, meaning that users of BlackBerry, Android and iOS will be able to have real-time conversations among themselves. Users will also be able to see if their messages have been delivered and read, and you'll also be able to see whether or not the recipient is writing a reply.

The service also allows the sharing of photos and voice files, and up to 30 users can form a group and communicate at the same time, or share files and schedules.

At this point in time, there are 60 million BlackBerry Messenger users (on the BB platform alone, of course), and they average 90 minutes of use per day. To give you some more figures, it's estimated that over 10 billion messages are being sent and received every day.

That being said, BBM is quite popular and it's definitely a very welcomed addition in the iOS and Android app line-up. We're eagerly waiting for its arrival. Hopefully, the previously rumored Samsung exclusivity (which allegedly consists in a 3 month exclusivity period for Samsung devices) will not become a reality. Unfortunately, BlackBerry has not mentioned anything regarding this particular matter.

Is anyone interested in BBM on Android or iOS?
