SmartQ X7 Might be a Google Nexus 7 Alternative

Chances are that if you ask for advice regarding the purchase of a 7-inch tablet, most of the people you ask will guide you towards the Google Nexus 7, and for good reasons. The gadget offers a very decent list of hardware specs, it benefits from Google's full support and it also comes at an affordable retail price.

Nonetheless, the Nexus 7 is not the only answer and there are a few alternatives out there. More recently, the China-based consumer electronics manufacturer Smart Devices has also released its own N7 alternative that goes by the name of SmartQ X7, and although its price-tag is $50 higher than the entry-level Google tablet, the X7 does offer a few extra features that the Nexus lacks.

The SmartQ tablet offers a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800, an OMAP4470 dual-core SoC running at 1.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot. Additionally, it also arrives with a rear-facing camera, an FM transmitter and HDMI-out, features that are not to be found on Google's device.

Software-wise the X7 runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean which is not so bad considering the fact that Android 4.2 has just seen the light of day. However, whether or not the X7 will receive timely updates in the future remains to be seen. Guaranteed it will not benefit from the same support as the Nexus 7, because no non-Google device does.

As for availability, the SmartQ X7 is now available in China and you can order it online. Shipping will cost you an extra $20-$28 depending on whether you prefer regular or express mail which isn't really that bad, but on the other hand you'll probably run into difficulties in case something goes wrong and you'll need to take advantage of the warranty.
