Earlier this year there have been speculations that the next big software update from Google will be Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Initially, this particular software version was expected to make its debut during the Google I / O event, but then we found out that version 5.0 will not be ready until then, and it might not be ready this year at all. The reason for this is mainly because the majority of smartphone manufacturers haven't really been able to keep their handset line-up up to date.

In any case, the good news is that Google has been working on a new software update nonetheless, and although this iteration still remains in the "Jelly Bean" category, any improvement is welcomed.

After Android 4.3 Jelly Bean got leaked on the Nexus 4 and the SGS4 Google Edition, the search engine giant has just made this particular OS version official.

In a nutshell, Android 4.3 is more of an "under-the-hood" update, which means that most of the changes are not really visible. For instance, support for Bluetooth Low Energy has been added, as well as a handful of new tools for developers. There's also OpenGL ES 3.0 included in the package, as well as new DRM APIs. This will allow content providers to offer better content, and as an example, Neflix has just released a new version of its application which is able to stream in 1080p.

There are new goodies for tablets as well, such as the restricted user profiles with built-in parental controls and limited access.

As far as availability goes, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 as well as the Nexus 10 and the Galaxy Nexus are top priorities. Android 4.3 has just been released on these particular gadgets yesterday, so if you own one of them then go into that settings menu > About device and hit the "Check for updates" button. You should be able to download the new iteration over the air. The newly announced Nexus 7 (2) will arrive with version 4.3 out of the box.

Have you already updated your gadget? Have you noticed any other changes?
