While the majority of smartphone manufacturers continue to push flagship devices on the market, Kyocera also continues to do what it does best: expanding its budget-friendly waterproof / rugged smartphone line-up. After Verizon's Hydro Elite and Boost's Hydro Edge, Kyocera has now launched a new waterproof device in MetroPCS' stores, dubbed the "Hydro XTRM".

Spec-wise, the Hydro XTRM features a 4 inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 480 x 800 and a pixel density of 233 pixels per inch, a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon dual-core chip clocked at 1.2 GHz, an Adreno 225 GPU, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of storage and a microSD card slot that allows you to expand by up to an additional 32 GB. The handset packs a 5 MP main camera complemented by an LED flash, and a 1.3 MP secondary sensor on the front panel. The XTRM runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, and draws its energy from a 2,000 mAh Li-Ion battery that promises up to 408 hours of stand-by, or up to 12 hours and 30 minutes of talk time.

As expected, the Kyocera Hydro XTRM is IP57 certified, which in translation means that the handset is dust-proof, and can also survived submerged under water for 30 minutes. Additionally, the handset is also shock-resistant, rated MIL-STD-810G, and it also features the manufacturer's tissue conductivity technology dubbed "Smart Sonic Receiver", which allows for improved hearing in noisy environments.

As far as pricing goes, MetroPCS offers the handset at the price of $169 (without tax). You can pair up the phone with one of MetroPCS' plans that offer you Unlimited everything for $40, $50 or $60. (The cheaper the plan, the lower the amount of 4G data speeds – after which down throttling occurs).
