Can't call a friend's Cricket cell phone but I can text it

I can't call a friend's Cricket cell phone with my Virgin Mobile phone but we can text each other. When I call her phone I get the message "The Cricket number you have called is no longer in service. Message 21 SAT". I haven't found much info on this but based on what I've read, I believe that "SAT" stands for San Antonio, Texas. I live in Round Rock, Texas (suburb of Austin). She actually lives in Taylor, Texas and her phone's area code is the same as mine (512). I don't see why distance would be the issue because yesterday I called another girl I know in Chicago on her cell.
