it would be safe, as long as u know who ur getting it from. if its off ebay or something of that sort, id be careful... its like anything else, even buying one from the store can be unsafe, it can break outta the box ( god forbid ).. it just depends on who, where and how much ur paying for it... if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is..

As with anything that is not new, know who you're buying it from.
Don't buy from strangers unless you have a sure way of getting in contact with them later on.
If it's from a business, make sure you know the return policy and make the decision of wether or not you're comfortable with it.

Why bother to buy a refurbished product when you
can search around online and find them for next to
    nothing?

yes, you will need a new service contract, but think about the cost
of a refurbished one and the cost of what if it craps out?

Maybe get a 2nd plan and get a new sidekick that comes
with a warrantee or service plan...

The costs and security seems to make for a better choice to
do some homework and weigh out the pros and cons...

i w2orked in the retailelectronics industry for a while and we had some refurb products and i can tell you this from exp.

if you are buying from a retailer absolutly buy refurb this is something that was returned with a known problem that was almost always replaced not repaired and always tested most would have any firmware updates done to them at the factory and again tested then they will give a warranty usually 90 days or so and if there were any cosmetic problems they would get new housings again FACTORY installed

so if you ask me if you have the chance to get the product as a refurb then it is probally better then brand new that item was personally tested to work no brainer to me, but if "someone" did a refurb themselves then stay the hell away
If i helped you some +rep would be good

id just be extremly cautious on who i buy my refurb from.. if it is from a store, make sure u have insurance before anything... without insurance, that could mean big problems/trouble!! insurance is the way to go...BUT if its from a friend/person/ebay.. ehh, thats a little sketchy, i wouldnt do it.. that is just MY personal OPINION..that dont mean no1 else would either...just be careful like i said before..

I know that when most of us want something we want it now, especially in the case of electronic devices. With any cellular type electronics, this can be worse, since often we'll miss a good deal on a plan or package if we don't act while a "can't be beat" deal is going on, and we wait too long. This week might be great for switching to a sidekick or phone plan, next week might not. So you have to weigh out your options, budget etc.

It's safe as long as the risks of not buying new, are worth it to you. I always ask myself these questions when I buy anything used or refurbished, be it face to face on ebay or craig's list.

Here are a few rules I go buy when buying anything used or refurbished.

When buying used or refurbished only do so if:

    • It's a backup device for a device you already have.
    • It does not matter if it stops working a week from when you first turn it on, and you can afford to lose the money your are speding on it.
    • You can still get insurance on it, if it's the only device you can afford.
    • You want to try one out as cheaply as possible before buying a new one.

Never buy a used or refurbished device if:

    • If the device is the ONLY one you can afford because of the price that's being offered and happens to be the ONLY way you'll be getting one at any time.
    • The price is too good to be true.
    • The seller can't or won't answer any questions about it.
    • You can't return it, if it arrived dead out of the box (DOA).
    • Can't get it insured and it's the only device you can get and would not be able to replace it, even if you got one for the same price you are paying now.

EXTREMELY good tips blk! looking at ur tips, under "Only buy a refurb if"- isnt it true you can only get insurance on your phone within a certain amount of time, ( 14-30 days after activation ) ??
