Just thought Larry'd like to gloat!

I'm in Cancun, Mx, and the hotel I'm staying at (with free WiFi) is
apparently blocking SIP-based VoIP. Can't imagine why, since their phone
system allows generous rates as low as $3/minute to call the USA! ;-)

Skype, however, sailed on through at $0.021/minute, from my Windows Mobile
handset. (Fring, even using Skype mode failed- I could hear, but no one
could hear me, either on my WinMo phone, or wife's iPhone.)

    So gloat away, Lar! ;-)

Oh, and Vic: "iPhone... no VoIP for you..."

iPhone users are much too cool to use VOIP.

Maybe you could charge your fellow hotel guests $0.10/minute to use your
    Skype account!

Aw, P'shaw. T'weren't nuttin' fer Skaipe!

They can't block Skype as it will work on ANY port, even port 80 if it
comes to that. You're better off with 256-bit encryption in case the
Policia is monitoring, anyways. Fring in Skype mode ISN'T, by the way,
    encrypted....a thought.

I believe the only "Skype" thing Fring does is go steal your contact
list from the Skype server, anyhow, then sends it to the Mossad back in
Fring's home country where your US phone records are stored.

Could you use a Skype wifi phone like my Netgear SPH101, or do you have
to logon to the hotel via a webpage spammer, which the skype phones
don't have?? I couldn't use the Skype wifi phone any place that had a
webpage logon, which is what sent me to the Nokia N800 in the first
    place.....(c;]

Let's not hear any more of that SIP nonsense is better'n Skype and nasty
comments about "Skype is proprietary and just awful" when you get
    home.....(c;]

    Check your aohell email....

Actually Fring's big advantage (for me) is that it works very well over 2G
EDGE, where Skype doesn't. (Fring uses their own lower-quality codecs for
    2G.)

This hotel has no login page- it's open, but apparently port blocked.

I still prefer SIP because I can run it straight off my router to an ATA
(without a PC or proprietary Skype-phone), but Skype is nice for traveling
since you never know what you'll run into as far as "locked down" networks.

    > Check your aohell email....

Just did- I'll catch up with you when I get a chance. While the hotel
offers free WiFi, it only works in the lobby, so I grab my email/usenet
when there, compose replies offline, and send/receive back at the lobby.

It's funny how spoiled ubiquitous connectivity makes you, but at $15/MB (T-
Mo's roaming data rate here in Mexico) I'm learning to live without! ;-)

Stoped at a Telcel dealer to inquire about a Mexican SIM card, but they
wanted $50 US, which is the "fleece the tourista" rate. A local SIM would
knock the rate down to $4/MB, or I could get a week of internet for $20.

Yeah, the little Skype phones will work there. They can use any ports.

Well, glad you have comms cheap.
