Every time I've read a thread on range, somebody has ranked Nokia candy bar
    phones near the top.

I've had a half-dozen different Nokia candy bar phones and my favorite is the
    6160.

It does- to 3 watts on 850 MHz, and 2 watts at 1900.

No currently available phone I'm aware of even comes close to the FCC
limits. Most top out at 3/4 to 1 watt for battery-life and size reasons.
I keep my old Nokia 6010 GSM phone around for when I know I'm going to be
in a tough-reception area for awhile. The current version, the Nokia
6030 is supposedly as good. I have one of those too, but haven't had a
chance to try it side-by-side with the 6010 in a challenging area yet.

Is this a discontinued model? The closes model is the 6133 on the Nokia
    website.

What makes you think a flip phone has any less range than a non-flip
phone? Several Cingular flip phones have excellent range, notably the
new RAZR V3xx, which outperforms Nokia handsets in my tests.

If you want more range than that, Motorola makes a GSM "bag" phone.
