I'm going back to Cingular. I don't want to get tied in with
a two year contract that all providers would love to have people
do. I'm not interested in their new phones that are more fluff
than functional. Most of my needs are outside of GSM areas and
I still want some roaming capability.

So I'm considering using my old Nokia 5160 800/1900 TDMA phones.
That way I can go with a one year contract and if better phones
or better rates should come down over the next two years, I won't
be stuck with an old plan.

    Any problems with this idea?

No, but you shouldn't even need a one-year contract- Cingular will let
you go month-to-month if you have your own phone.

I tried that 3 years ago with my own phone, but they wanted a one
    year contract.

Where did you go- a dealer/agent, a Cingular-owned store or over the
phone? Agents get paid something like $35 if you go MTM, or about
$150 if you sign for a year. Many pretend there's nothing less than a
    one year.

Since you have the phone already, you should be able to do this over
the phone with customer service at 800-331-1550.

It was a Cingular rep store. Because of terrible coverage at that time,
they let me out of the contract. Actually, they let me use it for an
entire month. Nearest two towers were ten and eight miles from me. Now
the neatrest tower is ony five miles away and in line of sight - I can
see all but the building at the bottom of the tower from my front porch.

How about this- Can I use my old Samsung SCH3500 with Cingular? MTM? 1year?

    Thanks
