None, really, if you use IR. You just need to setup the laptop to use
a "generic IR modem" and dial the data number for Cingular GPRS, which
is probably *99#.

Also, you WILL need to subscribe to a data plan add-on of some type
from Cingular, of course.

naturally....

it's not like u can just use airtime to go online like a landline,
cingular has a special charge for this u know....

Correct. Cellular, you may have realized, is NOT a landline.

think Cingular is in league in Satan, but charging for GPRS is
standard in the industry.

I use IR to connect my palm handheld computer to the net and I called
cingular and asked if I was only using my minutes and they said yes. Why
would one to to pay for a data plan if connecting with a laptop?

this on the weekend and using your 3000 N/W mins ?

doesnt care if it is data or voice....cellular does.

SINgular is satan but thats beside the point, refer to the guy above's
post and explain that... i guess it depends, if cingular doesnt know
you are using it for the net they dont charge u, but if u call and ask
if u can they'll add a package onto your ****in account....

I called 611 and asked the person and they seemed familiar with using the
cell phone as a modem and clearly stated that if I was connected during my
anytime minutes I would just use those and if it was during nights and
weekend I would be using night and weekend minutes. Other people in the
group here have confirmed it so I guess I will know for sure when the next
bill gets here.

Steve, landline companies don't care because they don't have to do
anything differently- cellular companies do.

I'll try to blast through your bitterness and get right to your
ignorance. Might be hard...

Regardless of what the owner's manual of one's shiny new cell phone
might hint, NO digital cellphone actually has a modem in it- at least
not a modem in the traditional sense. Instead, they have software
that lets them exchange data with cellular providers.

When you make a modem call on a landline, your modem talks directly
with another modem. With a cellphone, you (your PDA, your laptop, the
WAP browser in the phone, etc.) sends and receives data with the
cellphone company who needs to use one of their modems (or a broadband
connection) to conect for you. So everytime you make a cellphone
modem call to your own ISP, the cellphone company lets you "borrow"
one of their real analog modems to make the connection.

So, in order for your account to have "permission" to "borrow" a modem
when needed, you have to have the data option added to your account.
When I was with Cingular, they added this option for free to anybody
who asked, but since then they were charging $3.99/month for that
option, but it also included the use of Cingular as an ISP, so you
didn't need your own. Any data calls you make come out of your plan
minutes. Based on this thread, it sounds like Cingular doesn't charge
the $4 anymore.

The discussion above relates to "CSD" or Circuit-Switch Data- a slow
9.6kbps data method. You can also pay extra for faster "GPRS" data,
But that's charged by the KB, not by using minutes.

If you read what I wrote above, you cannot make cellular data calls
without a cell provider "knowing about it" since their data equipment
at headquarters is required to make the call!

For example, AT&T doesn't support CSD calls at all. They don't give
customers access to a direct-dialed modem line. All data w/AT&T is
charged per KB. T-Mobile, like Cingular, allows both, based on the
customer's choice and need.

No, Allcock simply said you have to have a data plan- not that you
have to PAY for one. As I stated, when I was with Cingular, the CSD
option (what Cingular calls "Wireless Internet"- not "Wireless
Internet Express") was free to any customer with a data-compatible
handset. But until I called and requested the data plan, the "modem"
in my phone didn't work.

Now I was with Cingular in Kansas City, which was TDMA at the time.
Perhaps Cingular automatically turns data on for GSM? (T-Mobile does-
all customers get the CSD option turned on by default- you don't have
to request it.)

Cingular (after having me on hold for a long time) just told me there is no
CSD option for the GSM phones, just GPRS. I think they just offered me
wrong info. Is this true?
