From what I have read in this group Dallas is GSM 850 I think. I also
thought I had read that 850 was the same at GSM 900 or I could be
mistaken? If this was the case could a tri-band phone that included
GSM 900/1800/1900 be used here in Dallas our would I have to find a
phone that also had GSM 850.

GSM 850 is NOT the same as the GSM 900. GSM 850 = GSM 800.

GSM "850" is not the same as GSM 900. GSM "850" is in reality
cellular 800 which has been used for TDMA and AMPS for years.
