Hello,
I have come across an interesting issue that I hope perhaps someone here
may be able to explain.
I had an Ericsson T39 for a couple of years and just like the person in
one of the earlier posts, I loved it. So much, in fact, that I have just
purchased another one as a replacement for the original, as the old one
has really just about had enough. I discovered a few of these phones are
still available on ebay, so I went ahead and got one, brand new, and for
a pretty reasonble price, too.
It seems to be identical to the one I've had, in all but one thing: The
battery lasts nowhere near as long. With its original 650 mAh one, the
standby time, as indicated when fully charged, is approximately 65
hours, while with an extended capacity 1400 mAh (original
Ericsson-brand) one I have it will give about 160 hours. This contrasts
with the old phone, which gave up to 180 hours with the normal battery &
540 with the extended one.
The new values are more in line with the older T28 model I used to have
before. I am at a loss to explain why there would be such marked
difference in standby times between what appears to be two identical
phones.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I am reading that you are using the exact same batteries on both phones?
Different firmware/software/whatever versions can affect battery efficiency
(or so they say anyway). Maybe someone recalls if the t28 had a significant
change in whichever version.
But it looks like a huge difference. Maybe a software upgrade merely
altered the way the phone guesses how many hours a battery at whatever level
is good for. Have you actually given it a finely measured test, or just
taking the phone's word?

This is a known issue with the T39m
It will need a firmware upgrade at a service centre to resolve. I
believe you have to mention the 65 hour standby issue to the centre so
that they can apply the correct fix.

Thanks very much for that information - I sort of suspected that it may
be something to do with the firmware. Now it's just a matter of getting
Ericsson here in Australia to help me fix it...Last time I had a problem
with a phone I had bought from the USA, they refused point blank to do
anything at all. Even their authorized service centre here in Queensland
would not touch the phone - despite the fact I was prepared to pay for
any repairs.

If it's a identical copy of the T39m sold in oz, then you are on better
grounds with S/E. Service centres tend to hate touching any phone that
is not locally sold (they even cringe sometimes at the asian versions of
the phones because of parts issues and other software issues they can
run into while repairing).
IIRc the t39 has a worldwide warranty, where the product is identical to
the one in the market where you wish for it to be fixed. I'm not too
sure if that has changed for later phones, but I think it might have.
If all else fails, call the 1300x number for S/E and talk to them about
it. I've found their phone staff in oz to be good when I have spoken to
them and have been helpful before when I had some issues with a repair.

I have done so before; I have had another T39m purchased from the USA in
March '03 which developed "the other" infamous bug - the "No Network".
I sent the phone to the Queensland Ericsson Service Centre, which is
actually operated for them by Telstra. They called me back to inquire
about where/when the phone had been purchased and when I told them I got
it from the States, they transferred me to Ericsson Australia in
Melbourne - that is the 1-300 number you mention. Ericsson then were
pretty straight forward: "The phone was not purchased in Australia - go
away, we don't want to know you!" Apparently they have a policy to not
honour any warranties unless a receipt from an Australian retailer can
be produced.
To top it off, the Telstra guys then refused to touch the phone
altogether - even though I would have been prepared to pay for the
repair (within reason). At the time, I assumed the problem may be fixed
by a simple firmware upgrade. -- No joy; even if I were to produce the
original purchase receipt from the US store, they were not interested.
Today I phoned Ericsson again regarding the standby bug on this latest
phone, with the same result - no go warranty-wise. At least the other
Queensland Service Centre, on the Sunshine Coast, said they were
prepared to try to locate the appropriate patch - as long as I pay their
minimum fee of AUD49. You could say the whole approach to service issues
is pretty average in this country as far as Ericsson are concerned...
Both the affected phones are exactly the same as my old model, purchased
more than two years ago; no "funny" Asian types. Funilly enough, that
one has one of the earliest versions of firmware and has been
manufactured well within the "problem" period (29/01) and yet it has had
no problem at all and has never missed a beat; it's just worn out,
basically...like its owner, after all this hassle...

Hmmm that really sucks!
BTW, there are another couple of S/E repair centres in South-East qld,
three in Brisbane last time I checked (2x archerfield 1x milton), one on
the Sunshine coast and another at Southport.
I had a look at the online manual for the T39m

Read through P.133. It clearly says there that it has an international
warranty. Although that may be over-ridden by whatever warranty papers
came in the box with the phone.

Thanks, Mal - I am going to send the phone off today to the
Maroochydoore Service Centre. The guy there sounded at least a little
helpful and promised to have a look at it & if it can be fixed by a
simple patch, I only need to pay for postage.
As far as Ericsson in Melbourne is concerned - forget it. Lucky I don't
like any of the new model phones - this way I won't feel like I'm giving
them even more business for no service!
