Just to clarify - aZ600 uses midi and midi only as it's ringtone
    format?

If this is the case then that sucks in a big way. My friends with
other phones have all these cool sounding ringtones with all sorts of
good sound effects and all I can find for mine is stuff that sounds
like it was played by a 6 year old on a Radio Shack keyboard. I wish
I researched this a bit more before getting the z600 and maybe I would
    have got something else.

Nothing trolling about it pea brain. Do you even know what the word
means?? Do you suggest that everyone who wants to use poly ring tones
    should have got a guitar?

    ....... but life stupid.

I bought the phone after reading a heap of reviews most of which
mentioned that it was possible to record a sound on the phone and then
use it as a ring tone. You can't and there appears to be no easy way
    to do it.

I guess if anything I'm just gullible for believing internet reviews
written by people who apparently didn't go over the source of the
    subject matter very well.

I am basically very happy with all the other features of the phone.

    For the polyphonic tones, yes..

What phones do your friends have? What kind of "good sounding effects"? I
have yet to hear a polyphonic/MIDI ringsignal that sounds any better than a
cheap keyboard "midi" sound. Phones that can use WAV/MP3 are a different
    matter, of course...

Of course, the quality of the ringtones depends on the MIDI files used as
well. Are you talking about the standard polyphonic tones, or have you
    downloaded new ones?

No, not at all, perhaps a xylophone would be more appropriate for you, I
think they are on special at toy's are us !

Simple maybe, but not stupid, please!

I agree with you here, a lot of reviews did state that you could use your
own recorded ringtones, but I don't think I will lose any sleep over it!

Yes, it is a great phone

After a bit more research I have found out that z600 also uses
    IMelody. Are they polyphonic?

    LOL.
I think that some reviews are based on reading the manual and PR
material. Just ask a V200 owner to assign a ringtone to a contact or
even connect the poxy thing to anything else via infra red.

If you want to have a sound effect on your phone then download a Midi
program (such as Anvil Studio) and play with the sound bank until you find
    the sound effects.

You can then save these as a midi file and download to your phone and use as
    a ringtone.

It does get a little boring listening to helicopters and trains and various
percussion instruments after a while though

Yes, but it's like MIDI with the addition of phone control features, not like
    WAV/MP3 audio.

The Z600 supports iMelody, AMR, and MIDI. AMR is closest to WAV, but is
intended for speech (8000 Hz, ACELP, 12.2 Kbps max), so music quality suffers.
(iMelody is like MIDI adapted to cell phones.)

Good free MIDI ringtones are available on the Sony Ericsson website.

    WAV to AMR converters:

    * Ericsson
    or <http://makeashorterlink.com/?E2A741697>
Requires 16 bit, 8 KHz, PCM WAV.
Windows Sound Recorder doesn't seem to produce an acceptable input file
format (and does a poor job on conversions in any event).

    * <http://www.aertsweb.com/wav2amrgui.zip>.
Appears to be the Ericsson Converter with a GUI.
