I can use this T68 as a modem for my laptop via IR, no problem. I bought a USB cable somewhere, so I wouldn't have to have the IR connection (its a pain in the airport to line it up and keep it still). It is an aftermarket cable with "Sony Ericsson KRY
111 117" on the connector. No matter what, when I plug it into the USB port on my laptop WinXP doesn't recognize a new hardware device. I can search for it, no new PnP hardware detected. I have no unknown devices, it doesn't seem to show up anywhere in
Device Manager. I only have one RS232 port, which shows up as COM1.
Is this a bad cable or something? Do I need to enable anything on the phone software-wise to activate the data port? I am quite annoyed by this. I have a Tungsten T3 with BT for which I use this phone as a modem as well, and that all works fine. I am
reluctant to try to connect the phone to my laptop via USB as the Sony software is so cumbersome to get configured, but that would be my next and last resort. USB seems like it should just work.
Thanks for any tips,
Will

Re: T68 as modem for laptop via USB?
Use Bluetooth. It's much easier and there's no cable to deal with. Most
likely Windows doesn't have a driver to use the Sony as a USB device. I have
never seen one and don't have a clue as to where you would get one.
All you need to do is get a USB BT dongle for your laptop. When you install
it it will put a shortcut to Dial Up networking. When you select this
shortcut and look at properties it will give you a dialog window that you
can specify the phone number and other parameters.

Seems to be the right cable at first sight. Mine says
Sony Ericsson
CE FCC (logos)
KRY 111 117 R4a
Type 4040032 (another triangular logo) N173
Y/0321 Made in China

No idea. I remember having troubles with the setup, too, and a
friend ( professional computer expert) did the job, but I can't
remember what exactly was the problem. One thing I do remember was
that WinXP wanted to connect on COM5 port instead of COM1.

Sorry, I guess I am of no real help, except for stating that it
works with me (with a T39, btw).

Hi Will
Try and see if you have something extraordinary in your control panel.
Ericsson's software does install something to control the connection from
their programs to you IR-port, ie they install a control panel applet to
assign a virtual com-port for you build-in IR-port. And through that
virtual port you Ericsson programs wil connect to you phone via IR.
Don't remember what the applet is called - my installation is in Danish, so
you wouldn't be able to find the same name on your puter ;o)
But my guess is that it is this applet, that is derouting your IR-port to
some virtual com-port and thus preventing you from connection through your
USB-cable. And at the "other" end this applet tells your installed T68-modem
to go look for this virtual com-port - that concludes the "ring", if you see
what i mean.
