Anyone know if a US GSM carrier can supply the P910a? Even on a
special-order basis, it might be worth the upcharge...

See More: US carrier for Sony P910a

Can't help you here, but I am in Los Angeles at present (from Australia)
and I am amazed by the huge lack of phone selection offered in the Cingular,
    T_Mobile, and AT&T shops.

Looks like there is needed a chain or chains of phone hardware retailers, to
give a better choice, particularly of unlocked 'phones.

Or maybe there is such a creature?

Firstly the average Mum or Dad couldn't be bothered, only tech heads like
    the people on this group.

Secondly a lot of people would shy clear of buying an unknown can't see or
handle phone over the Internet - who handles the warranty, etc?

    And so on.

John, in England and Australia there are chains of retailers selling plans
on all available networks with a multitude of phones, a huge choice of
phones in fact. This scene is much more vigourous in the UK than Australia
of course, due no doubt to the population being much bigger. You can buy
with a plan, or buy the phone outright. Locked or unlocked, up to you.

This gives the consumer choice and confidence. Just look at the posts in
this and other news groups from time to time enquiring (by USA buyers) where
can they buy such and such a phone, which is available to Europe / Rest of
the World, but not released in the USA?

I think that this would make a good business model for some entrepreneur to
    try out. Maybe you? <g>

I know lots of average folks that have no problem with either Internet or mail
    order shopping.

    >Secondly a lot of people would shy clear of buying an unknown can't see or

Buy from a dealer with a liberal return policy.

    >who handles the warranty, etc?

    The manufacturer.

Not me -- it's been tried and failed here in the USA -- margins are too thin.

They seem to survive very well elsewhere - in fact one guy doing this in
    Australia has become a millionaire.

Of course the re-sellers (if they sell a plan as well) get an overriding
commission on all calls, which no doubt helps a lot!

I would not buy /any/ phone without handling it. It's all very well seeing
pictures or reading so-called reviews that don't even bother to mention RF
performance, seem to have endless UI pictures instead that any owner with
half a brain could write. Although I've spent 100s of UKP over the www,
phones are too personal an item to purchase without at least looking &
holding someone else's phone 1st. I was vaguely interested in the P910i
    until I saw one.

It does seem that the way networks in Europe sell their services encourages
upgrading far more than in the USA.

    Regards
