Help unlock GC-83 card - ideas? (GC79, GC82)

Does anyone know if the algorithm to generate an 'unlock' for the
provider lock is the same as for any other Sony Ericsson products?

There is cheap ($20) unlocking software for SE phones at:
http://www.lockcracker.com/index.html but from the screen
shots, I don't see any of the data cards listed.

If anybody's got it, I'd give you my IMEI to try on 'em all.

I've dumped the command set (AT*) using a simple terminal
program - most if not all the 'usual' Hayes AT commands
are there, along with a bunch of others. I have user's manuals
but can't find these commands listed anywhere - anybody
got a link to something?

T-Mobile and ATT simply refuse to help get it unlocked.

With all the folks buying 'locked' ones off ebay I can't
believe somebody hasn't found a way to allow users
a choice of their cellular provider (yet). Who owns the
damn cards anyway? Is this the 1960's all over again?

I actually had a phone guy STEAL an extension phone I'd
purchased because he said I wasn't ''authorized'' for one.
Even today, cable companies try that crap with 'extra'
computers hooked to your internet feed. What a crock.

The software looks very much like DIV which was originally cracked by Laser.
DIV was released all over the place FOC and you should never pay for it
unless you buy the original DIV dongle (who's want to line Zulea's pockets
though?).

It won't unlock the card phone unfortunately, and I'd suggest asking in the
SE forums at http://beam.to/gsmforum for solutions that can unlock it.

Now we have the 234 page Sony Ericsson ''AT Commands Manual''
for the GC75, GC79, GC82, GC83, GC85, and GC89 (EN/LZT 123 928
R2A) wireless cellular air data cards.

If you use a terminal program (I like HyperTerm) and type AT *
you will get a 'dump' of all the supported commands.

That works even without a valid SIM inserted. Gives you something
to do with that ebay el cheapo useless you bought.

This manual explains, in 'telephone guy' talk, what each of them
does. There are a number of 'locks' ... this is gonna take a 'tip'
or two, I suspect, but the SE algorithm calculators are not that
hard to find ... just hope these cards use an already known one
and all we need is the command syntax to enter it, once you have
an IMSI/IMEI and maybe MCC/MNC provider number. Whatever.

Two things pissed me off:

ONE: was Sony Ericsson's unwillingness to provide unlocking help
(ATT has ALWAYS been a bunch of jerks so I didn't expect much
from them) and

TWO: was those guys trying to sell 'unlocking software' for TWO
THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Maybe, if they'd just offered unlock codes for, say, twenty bucks
I'd have simply bought them for the IMEI's I have.

But now, I'm on a quest to get these things unlocked for FREE.

There is NO LEGITIMATE REASON to deny cellular customers
the freedom to CHOOSE the carrier they want to run on their own
hardware. Period.

They're hardly likely to help an end user circumvent a security feature.

The one thing that has killed the unlocking market is the low price that
unlocking hardware has now dropped to. If people are paying very low prices
for the hardware, the producer is getting a far lower return on their
original investment and therefore there is less money available to invest in
new handsets and R&D.

Really, and after they've spent thousands of man hours developing a device
and producing the requisite hardware, why should they virtually give that
solution away? Older handsets (particularly Nokia) can be unlocked freely
due the unlocking algo being widely distributed. Newer handsets are using
ever increasing levels of protection which someone has to learn to
circumvent. If there is little financial gain, why should they bother?

There is if the cost of the device has been subsidised initially by the
carrier. However, after the initial contract tie-in period I agree that the
network operator should be forced to dispense the unlock code on request.

gives a list of, I would assume, the services I can roam on.

Does my voice phone connect in the order they are listed,
as in 1,2,3... or does it grab onto the strongest one?

Can I re-arrange that list into the order I want them to connect
(or, attempt to)? Looks plausible.

Did I mention, it would appear, that with any one of the Sony
cards, a laptop (can be an old 486 running Win 3.1) with a
working PCMCIA (only need Type I) slot, and that manual
you have in your hands a wonderous GSM reader/writer?

Now to write a little script for Hyperterm to cause a SIM to
disgorge everything of interest - spill its guts, to to speak.....

All the commands to do it are right there, in the manual.....

And to think all I really wanted was to unlock some GC83's.

So I downloaded the commands manual, and I truly appreciate your efforts to
get it. I apoligize the need to be spoonfed, however, is it possible for you
to list the steps I need to take in order to actually unlock the gc83 from
att so i can use it for cingular or tmobile? i really appreciate it. some
smo sold me a locked att gc83 card on ebay and flat out lied to me and said
that it worked on cingular network. now i'm out $50+ and the jerk wont even
answer my emails. your karma will be infinitely good for helping myself and
other individuals that got ourselves in this situation and dont have as much
technical knowledge as yourself. have a enlightening day! :>

That's nice. Now, why would you want LOCKED cards?

Anyway, I've been thinking about this some more.

The Sony Manager software allows you to upgrade the
FIRMWARE of the card. I did that, maybe a year ago
when I first got one of these cards, and it DID NOT
reset the Provider Lock feature.

So, that must be somewhere in the card untouched by
a 'firmware update'.

BUT... I'd bet the code to CHECK that feature IS in the
new firmware. Maybe a little reverse-engineering on a
firmware file BEFORE installing it would allow simply
putting in a jump AROUND the 'check for SIM lock'
bit of code? Just an idea ....

Another thing that might help ... first, PCMCIA card
software that allows poking and probing all over.
I've got drivers from Win95 and even DOS days
that just might help - if anybody needs them.

Second, maybe there's a layout map of the internal
memory of these things somewhere, so we'd have
a better idea what to mess with, what to leave alone?

I certainly have no intention of changing IMEIs, even
by accident, but without SOME info about the inards
it just might happen without my even knowing.

There is apparently a Sony Viao laptop that has a Sony Ericsson
wireless modem built in. And that modem is supposedly the very
same as a Sony Ericcson GC89 quad band modem card.

Since the 'hardware' involved is far more than just a modem, Sony
has apparently been giving out unlock codes on request.

SO....

If you know ANYONE with one of these laptops and can get the
IMEI and request the (free) unlock code, it would sure help if
you'd be so kind as to e-mail the numbers - with enough pairs
it shouldn't take much longer to 'break' the lock algorithm and
we can all have the means to unlock these stupid cards.

The laptop owner needn't actually UNLOCK, just get the code
'in case' they might ever want or need it.

Just a thought.

Now that Cingular has taken over from AT&T the price of these
cards seems to have fallen.

You can now get the GC83 for ZERO, after $79 cost - $79 rebate.

Those ebay ads claiming: a) up to $250 value (and b: only WE
are honest in our ads)(sunsunsun?) are a little outdated.

Why buy an AT&T or Cingular card for more if there's no way
(at present) to unlock them, and/or if you plan to sign up with
Cingular anyway? The things are FREE, folks!

I don't know where it leads but if you have a valid AT&T PHONE
NUMBER you apparently can get help unlocking your AIRCARD
by following this link:

Can somebody check and see if any valid Phone# almost
automatically produces an unlock code for GC82s or GC83s?

Other than that, the Check SIM commands omits to list the PP,
PC, and PU commands (returned by my GC82). I do believe
the PU command is the one needed (with a valid unlock code)
to unlock the Provider Lock.

Anyway, the manual doesn't list it (command syntax) and the
phone just sends the two-letter command as ''available'' with
nothing about 'how-to-use'

Anybody know anything about the A3 and A8 ciphers? It looks
like you combine your IMEI and your originating provider (with
location), run the cipher (one or more times), get back the code
number key, used both to lock AND unlock your provider lock.

Somebody clear that up if I mis-stated things?

And, now that we've got something LEFT OUT, how about a
COMPLETE AT COMMANDS Manual for these cards? Is there
one someplace? Or, an 'Addendum' with the LEFT OUT stuff?

There are commands that these cards use that are NOT listed
in the 'AT Commands Manual'. Make that 'ManualS' because
I found another, and rather different, one.

Type AT* and compare what you get with the manual's list.

I also found a firmware update for Cingular locked cards
that might be unpackable/break 'em up into parts-able/
dis-assemble-able so we can find out what's going on
inside. Maybe...been a while..now...where'd I put Sourcer?

Is the internal processor an 8051? Anyone know?

Are you aware that a card sold on ebay MAY have had
someone try to 'pick the lock' enough times to render
it USELESS?

The info is there, to read out the lock status, in case you
really want to know ...
