I managed to drop my P800 into the sea for a couple of seconds and it's
died.
If I get a new machine will I be able to restore the back-up of the old
one onto it without problems?

On a similar theme.
I am going to get my P800 upgraded from R1D in a couple of days. Am I
correct in assuming that I can restore all of my programs and settings from
the backup & restore feature?
i.e. backup handset > go straight to service centre > have firmware updated
> restore backup done before going to SC.
Sorry if this seems a silly question but it's the first time I've been to a
SC to have the firmware updated; I've never done this before in 6 years of
owning a mobile (both Nokias and Ericssons).
Thanks for any advice
