t39 dead due to charging?

Hi all,
I was charging my t39 in the car and accidentally left it charging
overnight. The in-car charger was plugged into a 12V source that is
disconnected when the ignition is off. When I got to it in the
morning, the light was on on the charger so there was charge in the
battery but the phone fails to do anything, no chargin light, no
beeps, no message - just dead. Prior to this it was working fine, with
a week between charges.

How could leaving it connected to an essentially unpowered charger
kill the phone?

Is there anything I can do to revive my old friend?

3rd party car charger? I understand that some of the cheapies can cause
this kind of damage through overcharge or over-voltage.

No, it was the standard Ericsson one that came with the phone.
