    Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has had their t68i signal issue resolved either by
a replacement phone, a firmware upgrade or something else? I am referring to
the issue where you get "no access" or a signal drop and three beeps when a
    call attempt is made.

I currently have this problem and don't want to bother with any of the above
if it is going to make no difference.

    Thanks,

    Tom Parle

If it's already happened you need a hardware fix and a software upgrade
(i.e. sending it off to Celestica jobbie).

If it hasn't happened yet you just need a software fix, if you catch it
in time (you could take it to a service centre).

it has happened to me already. What is the hardware fix... and actual bit of
replacement hardware? Who are Celestica... are they based in the UK? Will
Sony Ericsson be able to do this for me?

    Thanks,

It's part of the antenna, with older versions of software it overheats.

If you call them on 08705 237 237 and describe the no access/network
problem they will give you a reference number and Celestica's address
(the company acting as their repair agents). They're in the West
Midlands. You need to send the phone to them by special delivery.

I had this happen to me with a T68. Took it to a service centre and asked
them to do the software upgrade at the same time. Had to wait a day - went
back - sure enough, software upgraded, but the 'no access' problem was
exactly the same. Went back the day after to be told that it'd have to be
replaced - took three weeks before I had a replacement phone. I dunno how
your phone contract covers this, but if you can get it replaced by Orange UK
as it's faulty, I'd go down that route instead as they should just send you
out a replacement immediately and collect the old one - without the wait.
Incidentally, I had an old Ericsson A1018s years ago that exhibited exactly
the same fault. I dunno if it was the same hardware problem, but just
thought it was an odd coincidence that the two Ericssons I bought, although
years apart in technology, died in exactly the same way.

Thanks for all the info guys...

.... Orange said they will only replace it with a second-hand returned T68i
which has been "tested" by their engineers! Im not sure I want a second-hand
phone when I have kept mine in such good condition. I am also not convinced
Orange test for this error, as it is intermittent and I know that other
Orange users have had up to 7 replacements that all still had the problem.

I am currently considering the hardware fix route, as long as SE will pay
for it (I should still be under warranty)

I was about to write a similar post, then found your post. I would be
interested to know how you get on if you are goingder a contract. I am on a
talk plan with orange, under 12 months old

On my phone, it started out as intermittent but gradually became worse until
I could no longer receive or make calls at all. If Orange issue you with a
replacement phone, it *should* (theoretically) come with the latest software
and therefore be fine. Of course, that doesn't mean to say it will!
In my case, the Ericsson service centre I took the phone to (I just realised
this was last year now) couldn't even fix the phone, so they had to send it
off to SonyEricsson to be replaced - even then it was only sent a
refurbished unit, so after three trips in and out of London and three weeks
    I had a second-hand replacement.
Now, I assume that since then, there is now a known fix for this problem
that is available at service centres. If, however, you find that the service
centre wants to send it away - find out how long it's gonna take to get
replaced because after my last experience I for one would never want to send
a phone to SonyEricsson again. It was stupid to have to wait three weeks for
a phone I could've gone into shop and bought brand new. They kept telling me
there were none in the country!!

    > for it (I should still be under warranty)

Hope it goes OK - get them to put the latest firmware on at the same time
    (but backup your phone first).

It happens on most Ericssons. I've not read about it happening on the
P800 though so maybe they've finally pulled their finger out.

Re: t68i signal issue - anyone solved this?

i recently took my t300 apart, quite suprised to see that their is
three pins which sit onto a thin plastic strip containing a bit of
metal that goes behind the case to where the plastic (and metal
within) spreads out to become the aerial (if you have taken one apart
you will know what i mean, just finding it hard to explain to the
peeps that havent a clue of what im on about or havent taken their
    phone apart).

Anyway, when i put the phone back together again I had to realign the
three pins with the strip to make sure all pins connected with it.
Sure enough when i turned my phone back on the signal was 50% better,
ok it might not be the problem with most, but after looking at this
one compared to other phones which have a wire from the circuit board
to the aerial (not a pin to a plastic strip) im convinced that the
problem with the majority of phones is this.

This has started to happen on my Mineral Grey T68i from T-Mobile. It
is intermittent at the moment. It is a fairly "new" phone (March 2003)
    - how new is the new software?

As I am still under contract on T-Mobile, should I contact them or
    SonyEricsson?

    In September it was R8A015. You can check your version with > * < < * <
    * from the standby menu.

I'm not sure how it works on T-Mobile but on Orange if you badger them
enough after going through three or four with the same problem they'll
send you a different model of mobile with a similar spec to the original.

Does anyone know which version of firmware fixed this problem?
I'm wondering whether mine (R6A...) is going to be problematic.

Didn't explain properly, forgot to say it means you can get it fixed
directly by Ericsson but if T-Mobile operate a replacement phone policy
you may have to go through them instead so they know how many times it's
    broken.

You are protected by the The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) and The
Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 with the retailer of the phone...

That will be T-Mobile if you bought it from them. If T-Mobile are only your
network provider then you need to go to your retailer (Carphone Warehouse
etc.). They are responsible for repairs and replacements for up to 6 years,
if it is a manufacturing fault (i.e. you didnt drop it or damage it
yourself). You need insurance for damage, loss or theft. They will probably
dispute this period of responsibility though as phone companies are
notoriously **** to customers (unless you have a large corporate deal with
    them).

You are also covered in the first 12 months by Sony Ericsson on warrenty.
This just provides the consumer with a choice of who to go to... the
retalier should be the first point of call though.

If they are as crap as Orange are to me then good luck.

    Tom
