P800 -> P900: can use the Backup/Restore utility ?

Hello,

Since the program to backup and synchronize data is the same
for the P800 and P900 (at least in its last version), should it be possible
for a fast transfer to back-up the data on the P800 and restore the whole
on the P900, or are there some drawbacks ?

It's looked upon by most people on the my-symbian forums as being an
unadvisable thing to do.

My P900 arrived this morning. I just copied the contacts over from the P800
to it, then reinstalled the software I had on the P800. Took a few hours
but was better than restoring a P800 backup to find that it's overwritten
files and caused problems.

I guess you could try it and if it didn't work you could reset the phone,
but who's to say whether that would even work. Is it worth the risk?

Obvious question coming up...

How do they compare? The P900 looks to be the phone I wanted the P800
to be, solid and professional looking, not a plastic toy thing. How's
the new keyboard? How's the new UIQ 2.1 interface?

We obviously have similar thinking, as that's exactly what I thought when I
took it out of the box. It *is* the phone I wanted the P800 to be. It
feels more solid, looks more 'business like' now, and call me a big kid but
the new stylus tucked into the body of the phone is *so* cool.

First huge improvement is the 65k colour screen. Pictures look like they
look on the pc now, gone is the colour banding and washed out look of the
P800, which was my only real disappointment with the P800 (I'd had a Nokia
7650 prior to the P800 and the screen on that blew the P800's out of the
water looks wise). The battery has a bigger capacity (up from 1000mAh to
1260mAh), but obviously the P800 battery fits ok (I used my spare P800
battery on the P900 to check things out, then charged the P900 battery
overnight).

New keypad is excellent, no way will I remove this one as it's fully
useable. One handed sms's are a possibility again thanks to it's quality
and the inclusion of T9. To be honest I'd convinced myself that it never
really bothered me that much, and that sms's on the P800 were a 2 handed
affair. Now I've got T9 back and a keypad that works well I realise I was
kidding myself and I really did miss it.

UIQ 2.1 is obviously a more streamlined version. There's more customisation
on the phone using themes, but they aren't the replacement for profiles that
I hope they'd be. That's probably my only minor gripe, but I've got so used
to changing volume levels of the phone for different situations on the P800
that it's no real hassle. Plus I haven't really delved very deeply as I'm
still playing 24hrs on, so I may find them more useful. Oh, and the fact
that Expansys sent me a German P900 - albeit with a UK charger - with a
German manual I've been reading the English pdf manual that came on the cd
and haven't gone through it all yet. And yes, I checked with SE, any
warranty problems and it's covered by the European warranty.

Other changes I've noticed are with the music player. Once you start playing
music it keeps playing no matter if you open or close the keypad. You can
scroll through the timeline on a music track or video properly now. You can
use mp3's as ringtones/alarm tones now (not that it ever bothered me not
being able to use them). Video playback seems smoother and obviously looks
better thanks to the 65k screen.

Can't really think of anything else off the top of my head. Bottom line for
me is just what you said, the P900 really is the phone I wanted the P800 to
be. That's not to say I'm putting the P800 down. It is an excellent phone,
but the P900 is better.

Audio quality is the same as the P800 as far as I can tell. Reception seems
a little more sensitive in that the signal will jump up and down sometimes
when the phone isn't moving, but I still get a signal in the poor reception
areas that I did with the P800.
