Doesn't seem like the Multimedia program within MPT does much but
transfer it's own files into my v551. What goes it that? I have some
neat wav and mp3 files I'd like to turn into "rings" on my phone.
Recommendations?

With MPT you can import whatever MP3 files you have and edit it to the
precise snippet you want to use as a ringer. Once done it'll load it to
the phone and you're done. For wav to mp3 conversion there are bunch of
free programs.

Re: How to I get MPT to convert MP3,Wav,etc. -> my cell format?
I have the latest version of MPT3.25b and every time I try to "save
selection as" of my MP3 file. I get the message "Failed to create
file" . When I highlight a large selection of the song and click on
the "Remove Selection" icon. It won't do that either. I'm just
talking about MP3 forget about wav files.

I use audacity to do my mp3 editing, saving under a different filename than
the original. That allows me to use more than one part of a tune. MPT
will upload those just fine. And, btw, Audacity is free.

P.S. -- Do a Google search on this group for mp3,ringtone &/or audacity. I
forget the exact subject line for the thread, but it included a link to an
excellent tutorial on creating mp3 ringtones with audacity. It was a month
or two ago.

Re: How to I get MPT to convert MP3,Wav,etc. -> my cell format?
Yes, it is an excellent guide up to a point where I have a problem.
When I am supposed to export my finished mp3 file and in the process
rename it's extension to ".mid" . Now that didn't and as it turns out
doesn't make any sense. You can't change the format of a file by
renaming the file extension as the guide implies. I tried it. The
new edited file plays fine as and MP3 file but not as a midi file. My
v551 phone wants a midi file. I need to know how to convert an mp3
file to a midi file. I have been searching the web for a program that
will do that and cannot find one.

Re: How to I get MPT to convert MP3,Wav,etc. -> my cell format?
Converting to midi is not a simple process. Why can't you use the mp3
files? The v series phones are mp3 capable.

Re: How to I get MPT to convert MP3,Wav,etc. -> my cell format?
I tried to delete my last post. I did get a couple of the MP3 files
to work. For some reason a couple of other MP3 files read as
"corrupt" on the phone. It's all good now. Thanks

At least on some phones, with Verizon Wireless anyway, the "renaming"
thing is due to the VZW messaging portal converting files with the .MP3
suffix to the QCP format before sending it to the phone, and some phones
won't accept QCP format for ringtones (even though they can play them).
So you rename (NOT convert) the .MP3 file to .MID, taking care in the
Windows file explorer to check the option to make sure suffixes are
displayed, else you will rename foo.mp3 to foo.mid.mp3. The portal does
not mess with files with the .MID suffix, so the file is sent unaltered
to the phone. Now, the phone ignores the suffix and looks at the actual
format of the file, determines it to be an MP3 file, which it is happy
to use a ringtone. They key to all of this is that some tools just look
at the suffix, but others look at the actual file content.
