Has anyone used a Motorola GSM quad phone to work as a phone modem for
a laptop?
Looking for a quad phone to use here in the US with Tmobile or Cingular
and for overseas travel. Features that would be nice are SMS,
calendar, appointments etc. I think the V400 may work, but not sure
about modem capability. Mainly want to know about connecting my laptop
for occasional internet service and data downloads from instruments in
the field.
What phone would you reccomend?
Thanks

Yes - V500 and V545 on Orange UK. Both dial-up data calls and GPRS.

If you have bluetooth then it can't get much easier. Otherwise, you're
looking at a USB connection.
Note that in Windows, if you're using USB if you install the modem while
plugged into one USB port, and later plug into another port, it goes
through the setup procedure, and makes a new instance of the modem and you
may need to adjust your connection settings. (Linux doesn't suffer from
this.)
The V600, V635 and RAZR should also work similarly well. I've not come
across the V400 here to know what it can or can't do.
I use my V545 for GPRS on an almost daily basis, using Bluetooth from my
Linux laptop. It also worked in Canada roaming on Rogers without me
having to change anything (apart from bracing myself for the crater caused
by the phone bill!)

V400 works also. I personally tested. You should have no problem, if
USB drivers are installed correctly.
