I like both of mine enough to have to charge one or the other every day.

My previous cellphones were an Ericsson lx19 (tdma), Panasonic Duramax
(tdma), Motorola V180 (gsm). And I've lived in a cellular "blackhole" for
a year & a half. Well, "greyhole" might be a better description -- both
tdma & gsm require being in the right spots in the house or at least facing
the right way, although gsm faired better in this respect. And reception
at home seems to work better for incoming calls than outgoing. At work,
until several coworkers switched to gsm, my Panasonic was the only phone
that worked pretty much anywhere inside our building.
Having said all that, my V551 gets better reception than any of my previous
phones, has decent battery life (I generally recharge about once every 3
days.), it seems to take a beating as well as my Panasonic did, and audio
is good. I've read there was a batch (prior to the one I bought) that had
all kinds of problems -- battery life, audio, etc. But I've been quite
happy with mine. There are those who rave about Nokia as compared to
Motorola, but I've had no reasons to complain.
You didn't say who your carrier is, so I don't know what phone options you
might have available. But you might want to check out the reviews on
phonescoop.com. They seem to be closer to reality than places like amazon
& epinions.

Have had one for about a month and find no problems other than hitting the
media mall button by mistake. Sound is great and battery last about a week
with an average of 3 calls per day, "charge overnight and run it till it
dies 3 times to condition the battery." After that charge at your
discretion

It is in fact a very good phone, one of the best currently on the market.

I've been using one for about a year. Must have been a lemon, because
I've had absoluety no problem. Standbye for at least 5-6 days, good
rf section, no connector issues. Only a broken outer lcd, and I did
that by dropping it on the concrete about a week after getting it.
Only gave it to my wife so I could upgrade to 635i.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. How do you like the 635i? That's
the one I think I want.

I've only had it for two weeks, so I can only give first impressions.
Comfortable to hold, well balanced, a little bit harder on battery
than the v551, but that may be because it's not yet 'broken in.'
1.2M camera takes good pics, good video, rf section works every bit as
well as my v551 did. Large outside LCD is very nice feature. Now
that I've taken the cheesy silver covers off and had them powder
coated same black as the phone face, it also looks extremely sharp
The 512 Meg transflash and the ability to directly plug into a USB
port now allows me to have a portable 512 Meg drive with me at all
times. Small disadvantage, need to carry the cable, but, that's just
a matter of putting it into my pocket. Becomes a habit, and then it's
always with me.

The V3x is a 3G/UMTS phone which is designed for the European market. As
it lacks GSM850, it would be of limited use for a Cingular USA customer.
The phone to watch for is the V3i.

Not necessarily:
* It's widely rumored that the V3x will be released into the USA market, and
Cingular is likely carrier (given that only Cingular has UMTS in the USA).
* The V3x is quite a bit more capable than the V3i.
Time will of course tell.

Re: motorola 551 quality
v551 is an excellent phone. Much more solid than a V220.
Have had one for a year. Better than the V300, V400 and V600, its non-EDGE
predecessors.

Sure. Specs do change, and carrier-customized versions can appear. For
instance, I'm looking ahead to the L7 which, among other things, appears
to have a TFT/TFD display which may do much better in sunlight than any of
the folding Razr models. The deal breaker is the fact that it is
officially spec'ed as GSM 900/1800/1900 which would make it kinda useless
for Cingular. But quad-band prototypes of the L6 and L7 exist, so the
final hardware may very well be capable of GSM850 even if not initially
shipped that way to European carriers.

If tri-band, there may well be both 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/1900 versions,
as is common.
