Problem with Motorola A920 - interfacing with PC via USB?

Hi all,

I have just purchased a Motorola A920 here in Australia. Although the phone
is a little bigger than I'd like, I have already fallen in love with its
features.
I am having one problem with it, though...


When attaching my A920 to the docking station, power cable, and USB cable
(then attaching the USB cable to my PC), Windows XP's "Hardware Wizard"
automatically recognises the device as a Motorola modem. It then offers
options for installing the modem software.

When I abort the "Hardware Wizard", I insert the CD supplied with the
handset, and insall the "Desktop Suite" software.

When I run the "Desktop Suite" software, it doesn't detect my handset (and
yes, I am selecting "Connect via USB" on the handset.)

I have tried this on two PCs so far, but to no avail...

I have called the 3 Care line and they think it's got something to do with
the fact my account is not active yet (my number is being ported across from
my previous provider next month), but I think they're just palming me off...
the mobile phone is functioning completely, and it's at least letting me try
to connect to the PC...

Any help appreciated.

The USB connectors seem to be a bit fickle- One problem might be that, - at
least on the IDen phones here in the states the software is not completely
compatible with Win XP. The workaround is to right click on the software
icon and go to the compatibability tab and choose Win 2000 mode (if you have
XP).
Also I would try the motorola site for USB drivers and install them first-
they may be newer.

Yes, for sure it has nothing to do with your subscription!

I had similar trouble with my Mot A830 and Win2K, and I solved it with
manually removing all the unused hidden devices and deleting lots of
Motorola modem stuff manually from the registry and from the winnt\inf
folder.

I managed to get the thing working by doing the following:

1. Open the "mRouter" properties window (on the PC)
2. Disconnect the phone from the USB docking station
3. From the phone's "Launcher" menu, select "Desktop Suite", then "Connect"
4. Reconnect the phone to the USB docking station
5. The "mRouter" properties window should update, with "USB" as one of the
ports to scan.
6. Check the "USB" box.

The phone will then be detected. Woohoo!

In the age of plug'n'play, it still really isn't good enough, in my opinion.

What is your supplied software like? The software supplied with the A920 is
garbage. Too complicated, and not enough functionality (in my opinion).

I use almost no software with the phone, just needed to make it work
with some service tools.

with some service tools.

it up one morning it tried and failed to install the "Motorola USB
Modem" due to missing files etc... I've not changed anything as far
as i know.

Now I have a dodgy device listed in device drivers -- if I remove it,
when i reboot it tries to install it again. When i disable it, I
don't get USB listed in the mRouter window, so I guess its blocking
that port.

I'll keep trying but I have no idea what has changed to stop it
working....perhaps flaky software and drivers???

The things going back anyway -- no use as a phone, and without sync,
no use as a pda either.

(except that mine hasn`t worked at all yet) there is no USB listed in
the Mrouter window, i have tried a variety of different ways but to no
availe, i think this is quite a common bug. In a similar vein, i am
having to get mine replaced after less than 24 hours of ownership
di\ue to the fact that the keypad lock doesn`t work...

It@s a shame bcus i think the phone is ace but without sync and a
keypad lock it is little use to man nor beast!!

has anyone else experienced either of these probs..??

i got it working again from same situation. I think i deleted the
device in device manager, restarted windows to plug and pray and when
it detected the motorola device, let it properly install it.
