I just got into a BIG argument with nextel. (not that it hasn't happened
before) I found one of my phones went WAY over, (to the tune of 100 bucks
over) so i called th change the plan (my billing cycle falls on the 10th, I
called on the 12th of may) to change the plan to free incomming (as most of
the calls were incomming). well they told me this could NOT be done. (which
is total BS becuase I've done it a few times before, as recently as 3 or 4
months ago). well, to make a long story short, they basically told me, I'm
****ed for another month then I can change. I asked for a supervisor, and
then another supervisor and still got nothing done. any ideas on what I can
    do?

Yea that happened to me as well! Apparently now that they are
    "SPRINT/nextel" they
have stopped pro-rating back to the billing cycle. When it was just
    Nextel it was no
trouble for them to "HELP THE CUSTOMER", but not SPRINT/nextel.

A friend who has been working for one of the "Direct Connect" stores,
    told me last week
to look for more SH*T chances to the Nextel product line with-in the
    next 2 to 3 months.
If you look at what has happened to the shelf space at any of the older
    Nextel stores, the
iDen products have been pushed to the side. They are cramming all the
    Nextel & Boost
iDen phones into one counter, and putting all the Sprint phones into
    three counters they
have left. The counter were the iDen phones are is crammed packed with
    only a 1 inch
between the phones, were as the Sprint phones have 3 to 4 inches between
    them.
Wall space is the same way. I can understand stores wanting to ramp up
    a new product,
and have the (new) product displayed in a nice fashion, but not at the
    detriment of a
    proven and current product leader.
Just the appearance of the store is telling me that SPRINT/nextel is
    really pushing sprint!

    Re: changing plans mid month?

The reason they would not change the rate plan until the beginning of the
next bill cycle is due to pro-rations.

Nextel, like most carriers, bills one month in advance. Changing your plan
in the middle of the month will result in pro-rations on your next bill.
They have found that no matter how well they explain the pro-rations when
the plan is changed, most of the customers call when they receive the next
bill and scream about the charges, requiring care to re-explain it all over
again, usually with the customer not believing the rep. Most system user
profiles will not allow the rep to change the rateplan in the middle of the
month, unless the phone is coming off of stand-by.

I can't comment on the retail stores, I don't go to them very often.

As for JDa™©'s claim that "Apparently now that they are
"SPRINT/nextel" they have stopped pro-rating back to the billing cycle.
When it was just Nextel it was no trouble for them to "HELP THE CUSTOMER",
but not SPRINT/nextel", this could not be more incorrect. Nextel put this
policy in place shortly after they switched to billing in advance a few
years ago. Due to the number of problems created by care reps ignoring the
policy, changes were made to profile policies in the billing system
preventing them from being able to change the rate plan mid-month.

    Re: changing plans mid month?

I just changed my plan the guy at the store was arguing with them on the
phone and told me to come back on the 19th (billing runs to the 18th) and
then they would change my plan.I called Nextel directly and they said no
problem they would change right now.But when I go to my Nextel it still
lists it as old plan called Nextel back and they said it wouldn't go into
effect until end of billing cycle.

it's REALLY funny you mentined that.... while was on the phone with them I
noted that I HAD switched the plan no longer than 2 months before mid month.
she informed me that I did it because the phone was on stand by (which it
was on stand by for about 2-3 days.. long story.. dont' ask) so I told the
supervisor "your telling me if it was on stand by I could switch my plan?"
she told me "yes" I said, "ok lets put the phone on stand by then" she
laughed, and sent me back to the orignal peon I was dealing with. to make a
long story short, I had her put the phone on stand by and she gave me the
"can i do anything else for you?" my reply was "yes, take the phone off
stand by and put it on the rate plan" she FLIPPED out. it was sort of funny
went into some sort of rant saying "you are trying to commit fraud, and I
will NOT be apart of this!" then said "I'm making a note in your file so no
one else wil do this either"... anyway I'm looking to switch to cingular...
I'm sick of all the damn games, OLD phones (camera phones with LESS than 1
mega pixel? come on!)... inferior service and all this BS anytime I call
them. I wonder what they will tell me when I call to cancel... I'm sure
they'll be more than happy to swithc my plan then, fi not I think I'll go to
cingular, move my numbers, and deny the charges on my AMEX when I get the
1,000 dollars + in cancelation fees (I have 9 lines.. did I mention that?)

    Re: changing plans mid month?

Ok I figured I'd update this cause quite frankley, it blew my monid. I
called up nextel/sprint to change the plan (again) because I dind't want to
wait, forget about it and be in teh same boat next month. well long story
short I call up ask to change the plan, am put on hold for a few minutes
while she does it, and then she comes back saying "ok your plan is changed
as of today" I was shocked, I said "your saying my plan as of right now is
changed?" she said yes. (my orignal plan was to go to the canceltaion dept
when she refused me or to call back when my bill came in and tell them "I
was told that day my plan was changed, whats the deal with it not being
changed til now" but it seemed to work out fine. Nextel/sprint has managed
to dumbfound me again. it seems I could call there 5 times, ask teh same
question, and get 5 different answers. I can't wait for the day my contracts
    are up......
