I think that people will choose to cancel and purchase new phones with
Verizon if they are with Nextel now. I sampled Nextel while I still had
my Verizon and the cellular service is terrible. I think that one major
problem Nextel has is that when you call someone that is writing a
message or on the radio, the system seems to glitch at times and says,
"You have reached a disconnected number, please try again!" This
happens off and on with my friends that have Nextel. This way you
cannot leave a message. Also, you have to listen to.... hold while the
Nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located!" I think that not
only will Verizon take Nextel to a very low clientel rating, but will
have better features off the bat. I have friends that work for
Corporate and they are telling me that the pricing plans will be
easy...$15 to any pricing plan for unlimited Push-To-Talk and its
Nationwide. Nextel charges $10 on a pricing plan which are pretty
expensive already. I also heard that Verizon has a 10 year contract
with Motorola which means Nextel will most likely be using the same
phones from this moment on...if this is true. A family friend owns a
huge construction company that has about 150 Nextel phones already
stated he has been out of contract and is ready to switch. He said he
has heard a lot of big businesses are stating the same. Nextel has had
the same phones for some time now with terrible battery life. I think
they have great features, but I think that Verizon will have what the
    "average" user is looking for!

I think Nextel has such a huge block of subscribers that use PPT between
them that it may take a long time for Verizon to catch up. I can't tell you
how many contractors in the construction industry and building services
industry that use and depend on Nextel to communicate with each other via
PPT.Verizon should have kicked their butt about 4 or 5 years ago.

Verizon has been testing this for about a year now. They should be up
and ready next month. I think that they are already ahead with the
features that they will be using.

I'm in NewEngland and just switched from Cingular (they suck), to Nextel
after carefully comparing Verizon and Nextel for features and price.

Pricing is competitive if you level out what you are getting. What sold me
on Nextel that Verizon doesn't offer:

    1. True nationwide no roaming/long distance shared across phones on the same
account. Verizon will sell you nationwide, or shared but not together.
Their contract states, for the shareplan $0.45/min in the Verizon network.
When roaming, $0.69 rate applies, and the language in the fine print leaves
me wondering if there are times when airtime and long distance charges could
be even more. Nextel's shared nationwide plan is $0.40/minute beyond
    allocation, period.

    2. Verizon's mobile to mobile service is charged at both ends, by the whole
minute, at $0.40/minute after allowance is used. Talking to your wife is
running you $0.80 per minute, and you pay for the whole minute whether you
use it all or not. Compare that to Nextel's direct connect plan: only the
originator pays for the call, charged by the _seconds_ actually used, at a
rate of $0.10/min. Nextel is much more cost effective, and they are
extending this service nationwide right now.

    3. Search the web for complaints... I can find dozens of posts from people
that feel burned by Verizon. Most of the material I've read about Nextel is
    pretty positive.

    My 2 cents...

Not true. We switched from Cingular because that was the case. I get
better reception OUTSIDE of town with Nextel than with Cingular! We even
went camping and checked my e-mail and PPT'd with the office the whole time.

    Good points, TW!

Nextel may have "no roaming" on all their plans, however, Nextel is only
in 31 states!!!!! If you were to sit and compare prices, Verizon is by
far cheaper and better. I just verified today that Verizon Radio
Service will be launched August 8th. They said it will be either $10 or
$15 a month added to any plane for Nationwide Connection. Cheaper and
better than Nextel has! Also, it conversation is the same on the radio
as if you were on the phone. This means no delay, they said it's going
to be TRUE Digital! That's funny because Nextel has been out here for
11 years and they still have a 1 second delay that only took 6 months
for Verizon to fix. It shows who is up on Technology and who can use
    the help!

I think it is going to be a while for Verizon to overtake Nextel for the PPT
market. I think most customers that wanted that feature are using Nextel
already. Many of these customers are using PPT to communicate between
    customer-to-customer.

I am glad that Nextel is getting some serious competition in this market.
Hopefully, prices will be better. Also, I hope more phone manufactures will
make phones for this market. Nextel / Motorola phones are big, lack
state-of-the-art features, and are slow to release new phones. Maybe
companies like Nokia, Siemens, Ericsson, and others will jump into the game.

The only reason that Nextel uses Motorola is because they are the best
built phones around. My friend dropped his i1000 from 150 off a tower
by mistake and just put a little crack in the plastic, still works fine!

Re: Nextel should be shaking in their boots

Around the Washington DC beltway, commuted by millions every day, the
average Nextel phone drops 5 phone calls per day. My Verizon Wireless
phone might drop about that many in an entire month. In the surrounding
areas, if you are not on a major highway in Virginia, or in the very
northern tip of VA, where their HQ is located, no Nextel service. VZW
has Virginia almost entirely covered. One third of the time I call my
uncle's Nextel phone I get a recording saying, "All circuits busy,
please try your call again later," or "Please hold while we connect you
to this Nextel user" and the call doesn't go through.

At least in this area, I think there will be plenty of Nextel users
ready to jump ship when their contract ends and try VZW's PTT. I don't
know one Nextel user that is happy with their digital cellular network.
Pretty sad considering its basically Nextel's backyard.

The only reason why Nextel uses Motorola is because Motorola hold the patent
on the Iden technology. I do dgree that Motorola does make good phones, but
iden phones are always behind, way behind, what the rest of the industry is
    doing.
