When they start babbling, hit the 'exit' button, effectively cutting them
off, and then answer them as if they had just beeped you.

After a few times like that, they'll learn to beep first, talk when
    answered.

No Flames here. I wanted to walk over to some guy in a restaurant and drop
his phone in his drink recently. Now with nationwide DC, I use it to
chat with my wife all the time. The toughest part is holding the phone
like normal, but curling my finger over to keep hitting the PTT during the
conversation. But you're right, as much as I love my nextel, I really hate
    rude users.

Why not do the same thing back to them. I'm sure they'll get the message
    fast.

That goes with any phone, not just Nextel.

it has nothing to do with the phone or nextel, its the users that are
rude. All the phones allow you to not use speakerphone for PTT, yet few
people use it. Speakerphone should only be used in situations like
handsfree talking while driving, in very noisy places where its too loud
for you to here in the earpiece, and when you are by yourself and noone
    is around.

    Re: Nextel PTT ettiquete

It would be very easy for Nextel to solve this problem by updating the
phone's software to go to the ear piece on the phone, like a regular call,
when DC is established. This way, the user is forced to manually switch the
phone from ear piece to speakerphone. This is how it sould be, just like
the i30 with the speakerphone activated.
