It may seem funny but when you think about it both companies have a huge
similarity. Verizon offers outstanding cellular service and a not yet
ready for primetime PTT. Nextel offers outstanding PTT service and a not
yet ready for primetime cellular service.

Re: Verizon Push and Wait to Talk
They're not really similar at all. Nextel's PTT is limited to Nextel's
small digital network, and when you have no coverage you can't communicate
at all. While Verizon's PTT may not yet, after 2 1/2 weeks, be ready for
prime time, you'll still be able to make a wireless call in more areas
than with any other wireless provider. Verizon understands that PTT is
merely an enhancement to being able to communicate. To Nextel PTT is the
only reason for being.

Re: Verizon Push and Wait to Talk
You might be laughing right now at the problems that Verizon is having,
getting their direct mode (or PTT) off the ground. But you must remember,
"NEXTEL" is NOT and never was intended to be a "Cellular" phone. NEXTEL is a
"SMR" or Specialized Mobile Radio (see Trunking radio systems). It was
intended to be for plumbers and such to reach "dispatch" or other units and
that it does well.
However....with that thought in mind, when Verizon and other carriers DO get
their PTT service overlayed onto their cellular system, offer better RF
coverage service than Nextel AND at a much cheaper rate, NEXTEL had better
get ready to do something stellar....like cut their rates in half, build out
to more places..or lose their customer base like rats off a sinking
freight-liner.
ANY and I mean ANY communications device thats not reliable or causes it's
subscriber grief is not worth a plug nickle. Many of the NEXTEL users hold
on due to the PTT feature and not wanting to lose their number they have
published for their biz reasons. You ARE going to see a fair amount of
"Churn" from NEXTEL in the following months, wait till PTT is available
elsewhere....Eddie

One thing I don't think people get, is the fact
that the delay will never go away with VoIP.
The basic operation of digital phones is they don't
listion all the time.
They have a slot cycle index.
That mean that your request to initiate a PTT
connection with the other phone, it will have to
wait until the other phone wakes up to check to
see if it has any incoming calls or such.
Once it does it, the phones have to transfer data
and verify that they can make a PTT connection.
Instead of a central switch making the decisions and
coordinating everything in the blink of an eye,
verizon leaves the process handling up to the phones.
And the time lag in the transmission medium between
the two phones is not insignificant.
It is about the same time lag you will get when
your computer request a page from an internet server.
The server's turn around time is almost negligible.
But you still normally have a few seconds pause until
the page starts downloading.
That is the same pause you will get with verizon PTT phones.
because they go over the same transmission medium.
When the phone is in a PTT connection, the phone is
listening for request continuously.
When it times out the connection, the phone will go
back to It's designated listening pattern.
That being, turn the receiver on every few seconds
and check to see if there is any incoming traffic, then
shut off again to conserver battery power.
If the receiver stayed on all the time to make PTT
connections quicker, then the phone would have
The same battery life as it has when in standby and
in AMPS mode.
All verizon did was put one of those internet voice
programs in a phone and call it PTT.
That way, they didn't have to change their network at all.
In my opinion, it is just easier to call the person via
the normal duplex method and be done with it.
You would already have the call finished by the
time you made contact with the person on PTT.

Re: Verizon Push and Wait to Talk
Eddie.... you might just see churn TO Nextel.... Come on another
vealot... "Nextel is for plumbers" Have you hit your head? Nextel IS a
A-list wireless provider PTT or NO PTT, Provider the same if not better
service than the others. Unbelieveable BS.... yet so typical for
vealots

Re: Verizon Push and Wait to Talk
WRONG mitchvealot.. but thanks for your worthless BS opinion of wireless
providers, grow up and open up you may learn something. But doubt it
cuz vealots never do. Why are you so nervous about Nextel? Is it true
they are kicking vzn's butt? soon will? can other providers and vzn
co-exist? Can it be possible other providers are as good as if not
better than vzn? Seems CS, other awards, and profitability are all
going to another wireless company, not vzn. Grow up vealot. The sky is
not vzn, The sky is BLUE!

Re: Verizon Push and Wait to Talk
mitchvealot.... you vzn's offical spokesman? you might have to fight it
out with the handful of other mental loser vealots here. WRONG WRONG
WRONG (AGAIN) Nextel's All digital network is not "small" like you.
Coverage is a myth you try to keep bringing up as a spin job. (which
aint working either) Might surprise you that some people have NExtel
enjoy it and soem dont even use it for the PTT, just the good service,
quality coverage, and the best advantage yet... not using the borg vzn.
ENough vealot try your spins and BS somewhere else.... You like your
dreams, and hopes are not working here VEALOT

tech....
Not true, Nextel is a fully functional wireless company which can and
does provide its customers with good if not better service than the
other providers

Everything was fine until you said that
SO... I call someone, wait 3 seconds for it to START ringing, it
rings... say, 2 times, thats what... 5 seconds?
They pick up, we say our peace, say..... 20 seconds, we hang up.
We have... for instance, around 30 seconds, and thats a DAMN short call
time.. Im sure youll agree, when you factor ring time, etc.
Now, If I PTT you, it delays about 3 seconds initialy, Your pocket goes
"Beep Beep, hey, I need you to run the report to blah blah before 5pm",
you push the button, and My pocket goes "OKAY"
Thats about 10-15 seconds of use...
I personally couldnt care less, as I hate PTT and dont want to get it,
but it isnt like you push the button, go make a sandwich, THEN come back
to tell the person what you need to tell them. You push, You
talk........................ they hear.

You have to factor in the 60+ seconds that it takes
to tell the other person on the other end that you have to
wait until the phone beeps before you talk. :-)
You usually have to tell them two times before it sinks in. :-)

What I'd like to see is for someone to take a PTT Verizon phone from
Charleston, SC, and drive it around the SOLID PTT coverage area on
their bogus coverage map across southwestern South Carolina, where
they MIGHT have marginal CDMA service on the widely-spaced AMPS
towers, but it would be a MIRACLE if it has 1X service to make PTT
happen.....too funny.
Then, when a TRUE PTT coverage map has been established, sue their
asses to force THEM to publish a TRUE PTT coverage map, you know, like
the one Verizon's sales staff is showing, the TRUE coverage map Nextel
produces for the same area.
