Does anyone have any idea why calls from a nextel serviced phone to 911
disconnect after 5 minutes? I work in a 911 center and it is truly
irritating (not to mention potentially life threatening) when a caller is
automatically disconnected from us after 5 minutes. Perfect example is when
we have a caller who is with a victim of a medical emergency. It really
sucks when we are trying to give CPR instructions over the phone and
suddenly the line goes dead. We really like to try to keep them on the line
as long as possible. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thankfully I've never had a medical emergency lately where I needed to call
911. But I'd definitely like to hear other peoples expiriences with this to
see if it's common. I mean unless I can just call and have a normal
conversation with a 911 operator...

A couple of month back I was traveling up north with my family on
vacation. We saw a small grass fire starting along the highway so
I figured I'd call 911 and report it so it could be stopped when it
was a small fire rather than get out of hand.
It took over 5 minutes to get the call completed because my "home"
county was not the country in which we were so they needed to
transfer me to the appropriate 911 dispatcher and all... at any rate
my call was NOT disconnected.
For what it's worth, that's my only 911 experience.

Same here, they connected me to the correct county name, but it was in
the wrong state, the sad thing is, I was in the middle of my home
county when this happened, I was reporting a fire started by a
lightning strike, I ended up calling information and getting the local
non emergency number instead. It was faster
