Went into a shop - asked for an unlocked handset:

"Sorry we don't do unlocked handsets - we do SIM free..."

If a hand set is unlocked - it works on any network
If it is SIM free - it works on any network

Errr - same thing or not?

A SIM free phone comes with no SIM, but could still be locked, an unlocked
phone will be unlocked, but may come with a sim. Simple

I ordered two SIM free Motorola V525's for my kids expecting them to be able
to put their o2 SIM cards in, fortunately I did a little investigating first
and discovered that the phones were locked to the Vodafone network. The
place I ordered from said that they were SIM free because a buyer could put
    any Vodafone card in!

I cancelled the order because it's another £30 to get the phones unlocked.
