I've just noticed with my Nokia 6610, when the keypad is locked, I can
press 0 and 8. No other keys, and in no other order. But if I press 08
when the keypad is locked, it shows 08 and the backlight turns on, as
if I am dialing a number that begins with 08. If I press any other
keys, it returns the 'Press Unlock and then *' message.

Anyone know the reasoning behind this?

Its so that emergency service numbers can be dialled even when the
keypad is locked. I think the exact numbers allowed vary depending on
which country the phone is sold in. I know I can dial 08, 112 and 911
on mine. Is 08 also an emergency number in some countries?

    Hi!

Yes it is. For example in Mexico.

    Cheers,

08 is the emergency services number in some countries (Mexico?) You'll
probably get the same phone behaviour if you key 112 or 911 (depending
also on where your phone was manufactured.)
