Texting from abroad

If I text from a European country back to the UK and my call plan includes a
certain amount of free texts, do these still come free ? Or as its going via
another operator in that country they are charged for?

What operator? the operator abroad usually charges your operator a small
amount to pass through their masts. As far as i'm aware all operators in the
UK now charge while texting from abroad. These used to be included in the
inclusive text allowance.

No, you'll have to pay a roaming txt charge. It varies country to country.

just as an aside, I do recall standing next to an extinct volcano in a
blizzard in Iceland and sms-ing my b/f back in London and thinking what an
amazing world :-]

in my country, when you texting abroad, you have to pay the roaming fee
plus a price for a text (even if you have a plan with free text).
