Having just bought an Acer 2702 laptop i decided to set up an internet link
via my Nokia 6230. I signed up for a PAYG Wannadoo account via the land line
to establish the settings. I then installed PC SUITE for XP but although an
infrared link was obtained ( the little iR logo appeared bottom right of
screen) PC Suite refused to acknowledge the phone. I managed to frig it
somehow to successfully dial up but still isn't recognised via PCSuite! I
downloaded a 'patch' ? from nokia.com for XP/iR compatability but not sure
what to do with the .inf file?
What can of connection speeds should i expect via the iR link? Is bluetooth
faster? DKU-2 cable link best?
Any tips, URLs and reccommendations much welcome!
Thanks ... Andre

Re: using 6230 as a modem for laptop question(s)
So, you've been able to dial-up with the phone? 9600bps will most likely be
your speed limit if you use CSD - circuit switched data. If you use GPRS,
you'll be able to download at about 42kbps. If your operator supports EDGE,
you may be able to go up to 115kbps. 115kbps is usually the IR link speed
as well, although it may be faster with some adapters; check the IR device
advanced properties for this. When you point on the IR icon in the system
tray, it tells you the actual link speed.
As far as the PC Suite is concerned, you shouldn't need any patches with XP,
and it should just work after you install it. You may need to run the Nokia
Connection Manager and select the connection type(s) you want to use though.
Make sure you use the latest PC Suite version - 6.4 for the 6230. If you
need to upgrade, completely uninstall the previous version first.
Of all the connection types, IR is the slowest, but it's all you need to use
dial-up, and it works well enough for the PC Suite. Bluetooth and USB are
faster, of course, but, unless you plan to transfer large files to your
phone all the time, I don't think they're worth it.

>OK, many thanks for the reply Vlad, what you says does kinda make sense but
you mention a faster connection with GPRS... Excuse my ignorance but how do
I connect my phone to the laptop to get better than 9600? If you could
explain as if you were telling a child how to tie their laces it would be
much appreciated!! I intend to use the laptop in the car to get mainly text
based data but a faster download is always better!! (less phone charges!)
TIA... Andre
p.s. Can my 6230 go faster than 9600bps? I have no specifications for it at
present...

Re: using 6230 as a modem for laptop question(s)
Andre, how you connect your phone to the laptop actually doesn't matter, as
far as the dial-up connection speed and method are concerned. If you use
infrared, the phone will be connected to the laptop at 115kbps minimum.
Now, the connection between your phone and the GSM network is a totally
different matter.
The oldest method is CSD (9600bps, 14400bps max), which is supported by most
operators, and they usually charge you by the minute, just like for a
regular voice call. There is also a high speed variant - HSCSD (43.2kbps
max), but it's expensive and rarely supported by operators.
GPRS (48kbps max) is a different method now supported by many operators, but
you usually have to subscribe to the GPRS add-on service to be able to use
it. Call your operator to find out what they offer and how much it costs.
If you can use GPRS, you will need to enter the settings provided by your
operator into the phone. (Or they may be able to send the settings to your
phone.) On your laptop, the only thing you will then need to change is the
phone number string in the dial-up connection properties. In fact, with
GPRS, you usually use your GSM operator as an ISP, and there's no need to
have an account with another ISP. In this case, the dial-up phone number
string will be *99#.
EDGE (117kbps with the 6230), a.k.a. EGPRS, is a higher speed variant of
GPRS. It is not as common as GPRS yet, but if it's supported by your
operator, you use it automatically instead of GPRS; there's no separate
configuration for it.
If you're interested in technical details about these standards, look at
www.gsmworld.com.
