I use it extensively when in a car; I have real old firmware version 3.15,
and no problems at all, except sometimes the microphone seems to pick up a
    lot of external noise.

What? You want to talk to someone at the exact same time they are
talking to you, so neither of you can listen to each other? Maybe
    not.

If you mean you can't stick a call on loudspeaker, put your handset
down on a table and wander around the room speaking normally, then the
clue to your dilemma is in the term 'loudspeaker'.

The 6230 does not offer a hands-free speakerphone function, so your
side of the conversation will not be picked up any better than laying
any other phone down and going walkabout. It's a loudspeaker, to
amplify whatever you are listening to, not whatever you are saying.

sure does. The Nokia 6230 is a hands free speaker phone, but in
speakerphone mode, it is limited to half duplex mode. See

If it can be defined as a speakerphone it's a pretty poor
implementation. You'd have to kep the handset within a metre or so. I
recall an old analogue cellphone I had 7 years ago that performed
    brilliantly with this function.

But it probably had heavier batteries than the entire 6230 weights...

It also had probably less than 10% of the processor intelligence
and audio DSP capability too, yet it did a better job.

You are correct in saying this - that's why it's called "loudspeaker" and
not "speakerphone"; the mic does not increase in sensitivity when activated.

A better job? Perhaps as a car-based phone. If you want to be understandable
when driving, don't use speakers or cheap carkits but just hold the phone in
your hand. Or use a good carkit, that nowadays probably costs less than those
    old ATF3 phones did then.

I don't think the specs say anything about full duplex *speakerphone*.
Without the speaker, the phone is full duplex, or is yours not?
