a mate has just rung me to tell me he has been given a Nokia 6310 I.

He tells me it's been un locked to run on any network, did not think you
could do it myself but anyhow it's been run on UK O2 for the past however
    long...

He is on UK Vodafone and say's the display states that but he can not make
or receive calls, the only thing that works is SMS.

I have told him to do a factory re set... is that all it needs or are there
other reasons why the phone wont work ?

    THANKS
    RICK

It sounds to be barred to me. Where did he get it from?

I thought that but I dont think it's the case as he claims to know the
phones history and he claims it's only ever been used on Orange and O2.

The symptoms you stated are classic signs of a barred handset. If he knows
the phones history get him to check with the networks if it is barred or
    not.
