I'm travelling to the US later this year - San Francisco and Vegas.

How easy is it to buy SIM free handsets in the US - and which stores should
I keep an eye out for?

    Thanks,

    Simon.

What are you going to use it for..? Maybe better to take a phone with you
and use a local SIM..? Bear in mind GSM is still very patchy in the US,
although it is ok in major cities, certainly I can vouch for San
    Francisco.

You may be better off with something like this:

I was thinking of buying the phone in the US (wider choice of models than
UK) and bringing it back here to the UK to use.

my mother lives in LA and it worked better for her to take her phone over to
la with her which was out of contract and me to post her a virgin sim,she
told me after she went to the phone shops in la she couldnt belive the
prices they charged for the phone.she said payg sims were $50/$60 in la and
she couldnt text home with them.

The problem there is the US uses different frequencies for GSM (where they
use GSM at all) than we do - they use 850/1900 whereas we use 900/1800 so
unless you get a quad band phone, which are still somewhat rare, it won't
    work over here.

Except that they'll be 850/1800/1900 MHz rather than 900/1800/1900 and so
be unusable in EU except on 1800 MHz networks.
