I know you can run the same mp3 for sms and ringtone, but I want two
different ones.

erm, you can!
to change the SMS alert:
Menu -> Settings -> Tone Settings -> Message alert tone -> Ringing
tone -> Open Gallery -> Tones [or wherever it is saved] -> Your Tone
-> Options -> Set as msg. tone -> Select
