    I think it's there to stop covert recording and as far as I can see from the
    menu options does not have the facility to switch it off. I guess covering
    the speaker at the top would help to muffle the sound a little.

    It's there so that the caller/called is aware that they are being recorded.

    Something to do with the Telegraphy Act, and being illegal to record phone
    conversations without notifying the caller/called.

    try these voice recorders if u don't want a beep during recording. u
    can also record calls without any beeps. get them here

    Bearing in mind, of course, that if you're in the US it's illegal to record
    someone else without their knowledge or a court order. The beep tones are
    there to let the other party know. This doesn't, however, make it legal.
    You still have to inform them. That you might have some other reason for
    taping the call doesn't make it legal.

    Is the "no-beep" call recorder so elusive that no one has found a
    cracked version software or a mod firmware that removes the beep? Is
    it that invincible? I do not mind paying for a version that has no
    beep.
