I'm on the verge of getting an N80 (Q: N70 or N80 ?) and I fancy
getting GPS setup for it like I've seen advertised for the N70.
Will the N80 run the GPS system on it?
What exactly is involved in setting the fone up to run it, what do I
need to buy and are there more than one option?

The N80 (as well as the N91 and the E series) runs a newer version of the
Symbian operating system (Series 60 v3) which is incompatible with software
developped for the previous versions. It makes no doubt that software
houses are going to quickly update their apps to be compatible with this OS
but at the moment i don't know os any GPS sat nav compatible with S60 v3.

You'll need to buy a bluetooth GPS receiver, the GPS navigation software
and some maps. Usually, you buy all that in a bundle. Tom-Tom
(<http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=208&Language=1>) is
usually considered to be the best GPS sat nav system available but there
are good and cheaper competitors too (see Route 66

Sounds like a good setup, but you pay top price for it.
The OP did not mention sat-nav specifically. For a free gps positioning
system, they could try J2ME Map (http://j2memap.landspurg.net). It acts
as a mobile interface for google maps. It has a feature that will
pinpoint your location on the map from a gps signal. Bluetooth GPS units
can be bought from eBay for £40. Unfortunately my phone can't run the
latest J2ME apps, so I've not used it. Worth a look though.
They data costs might be an issue if used to constantly update over a
long journey, but for individual requests it should be cheap. Much
cheaper than TomTom @ near £200.

I was not aware of this, thanks for pointing it out. When proper 3G data
plans will be available, this kind of application sure will be a killer.

There are some great applications for mapping and gps that I want to
try, but they run on different OSs or need specific phones.
Mologogo will show your location on a google map, along with the
location of friends who have signed up for the service. It ties in with
a website that tracks your route throughout the day. It can alert you if
friend are nearby. Trouble is it has been developed for a range of
Motorola phones with GPS built in that only sell in the US (might work
with A1000).
nhGPS can take maps from google. Impressively it can read jpeg/tiff/gif
maps that the user has scanned or downloaded, and maps in .mjp format
that only load the part being viewed. The software has a simple
calibration tool for new maps. Can take GPS location data from internal
or bluetooth signals, track routes, load route files. Only works on
Symbian UIQ.

That whole friend-proximity thing sounds extremely sad if you ask me...
Which you haven't, so if you do, I will state my opinion :-)

Feel free, you opinion is very welcome.
I agree it _could_ be sad. I don't like the idea of geeks leaping around
screaming "Bob, Bob, where are you? My phone says you are within 50m of
me", or having someone I don't really like running up and saying
"Hello". It would also make phone-stalking very easy, no more hiding in
bushes outside peoples houses :|
Maybe a non-friend proximity feature would be more useful. It could be
used for avoiding people you don't like, criminals, charity collectors,
red light areas, less desirable areas of town.
It would be interesting to have a mobile app that combines instant
google maps/aerial photos, local places of interest, bus times/routes,
community news.

Here's an idea, participate in the real world and don't expect technology to
fake it for you.
Honestly, want to find out what's going on locally? ASK SOMEONE!

And yet here you are posting on your PC to people who you've never met
instead of going out and speaking to people...

You are confused. This is a news group for people that communicate via
small electronic devices transmitting encoded sound using microwaves.
I can only assume that you are mentally ill.
Accept my pity, and get well soon.
