    Wow! Just Wow!

The press is covering all the big news quite well, only the people
scared of the iPhone seem to be upset. Nokia is extremely worried by
this event, they can't get anyone to stand in line, much less buy their
poorly featured, heavy, very expensive cell phones. Apple has them by
the balls and they can't do a thing about it at this point in the game.

Typical news is positive, over 10,000 sold in the first day in Germany.

In Germany, the phone went on sale at more than 700 T-Mobile shops,
including one in Cologne that opened just after midnight with some 350
    customers already waiting outside.

By 5 p.m., Deutsche Telekom AG, which owns T-Mobile, said it sold more
than 10,000 iPhones in Germany through its shops and online.

    Apple's handset pulls the crowds

Hordes of iPhone fans descended on Apple's flagship Regent Street store
in London yesterday hoping to be the first to get their hands on the
    much-hyped mobile device.

The earliest had been queuing since 8am the previous morning, through
freezing rain. Many had been in line for at least 10 hours.

When the doors opened at 6.02pm fans ran in to the store between lines
of cheering staff. They emerged moments later, like Olympic athletes
crossing the finishing line, brandishing their boxed iPhones in triumph.

O 2 , the UK's largest mobile phone operator, which secured exclusive
rights to supply telephone contracts for the iPhone in the UK, said it
had ordered "hundreds of thousands" of iPhone handsets to meet demand
over Christmas and into the new year.

Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner, a consultancy, said between
350,000 and 400,000 iPhones could be sold in the first two months.

    http://snipurl.com/1tgpg

So now we have France to add to the mix on November 29th, and they'll be
selling fully unlocked iPhones, so a total of 650,000 iPhones in 2
months in Europe will far outweigh what Nokia can do within this class
    of phone.

So Apple is off to a strong start, it will be the No. 1 phone revenue
wise / feature wise in Europe within 6 months.

    You can buy one here:

Looks like you dug around and found the sole UK location (according to
the articles I read) with any sort of crowd and are using this to
    supposedly represent typical UK reaction...

nope, it was just this first one to come up.

    here is Sky News's take...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IGeYfP49s8

but if you remember, the big lines in the States weren't at AT&T stores
either, all the fun is at the 200 Apple stores.

we'll see plenty of videos and pictures as the days progress...

Yep! Apple has another big hit on their hands... France will be the big
one in Europe, they are already the most Apple savvy, so having a high
end Apple phone could send them into a frenzy. Steve flew in yesterday

Why would a Cologne store open "just after midnight" when the phone was
    available from 6.02pm?

The Register summed it up quite nicely, as "a tight-knit group of media
and PR people got caught in a feedback loop".

BTW, I'm still waiting for you to tell me where I can download the

sure, but except for some cold rain, it turned out to be europe's

That second link you posted, the Sky News story - it doesn't show ANY
people lined up anywhere. It's simply an advance story touting the
    features of the phone.

So my statement stands, that you found the only place in London that
    had any sort of line.

BTW, the AT&T store near me, in between two Apple stores (ony blocks
away) had hundreds of people waiting on launch day.

Yeah, as if the "Finder" source code is there. You can download XCode
with a bunch of samples, but now the Finder. or can you post the URL
to the Finder source code? No, you'll tell me how I need to learn to

Could you post the URL you got the story from? That'll help clear it up.

I have, years ago, and there's no access to the Finder source.

So I ask again, where I can download the source code for the Finder?

I thought 6:02pm was for the UK launch only. Get it...6:02...."O2" is
    the carrier.

In Germany it is T-Mobile, so the "02" part of it makes no sense.

Don't bother, he'll just tell you he told you where to get it
("developer.apple.com") and you should grow up and learn how to find

Yes, good one, but it could be 00:02 - "just after midnight"...

    > In Germany it is T-Mobile, so the "02" part of it makes no sense.

One of Oxford's many alter egos, Gene Jones, told the planet that "the
world's most advanced cell phone hits the shores (sic) on Friday at
6:02pm within these first 2 countries." [Germany and the UK].

    Message-ID: <[email protected]>

So unless Oxford comes up with a URL I'll assume the Cologne tale is
just that, a work of fiction, and he forgot the launch was at 6.02pm.

You say "much less buy their
poorly featured, heavy, very expensive cell phones"

OK, lets have a look at the features of the N95 8GB v iPhone

    N95 8GB
    iPhone
    User Replacable Battery Yes No
    3G Yes
    No
    HSDPA Yes
    No
    Camera 5MP
    2MP (I think)
    Video Recorder Yes No
    GPS Yes
    No

Need I go on? I do however accept that the iPhone has the best user
interface nut I don't think it will take Nokia and Symbian long to address
    that.

Perhaps you can explain what other unique features the iPhone has?

The ATT store across from Northwoods Mall in the largest shopping
district in Charleston, SC, an hour after opening was empty when
I got there to play with it and ask embarrassing questions about
    what software it would run.

There was never a line, outside, where the ropes were supposed to
direct the screaming fans into the queue, according to the
employees of the sports store next door. 3 or 4 people came up
    just before the doors opened.

If 200 people line up in front of ATT in NYC, what % is that of
the metro NYC population of millions? It looks like a lot on the
webcam, but, by NYC standards, it was miniscule.

    Yes, let's go on...

    N95 iPhone
    Multi-Touch Screen No Yes
    iPod No Yes
    Full Web Browser No Yes
    Screen Size 2.6 3.5in
    Screen Rez 153 160ppi
Battery Life (Talk Time 4HR 8HR
    Price $599 $399

    > Perhaps you can explain what other unique features the iPhone has?

There are not enough bytes on the planet to go into that much detail.
But the iPhone is far more technically advanced than the N95. The iPhone
runs pure Unix, the N95 is stuck with an ancient Symbian OS. The iPhone
has a much better touch screen, has multi-touch which takes the N95 out
of the running right there for savvy tech people...

Syncing is much more developed on the iPhone. It has a true iPod, not a
cheap MP3 player. A true FULL Screen Browser, not a baby browser like
the N95. Far better interface, the N95 seems clunky and poorly thought
out, not so with the iPhone. Super simple, super powerful. FULL email,
not baby email like on the N95.

Far better resell value in 2-5 years, nearly double since it's a better
designed, and Apple quality level product. The N95 will be a throwaway
in 3-5 years time. The iPhone will still be worth $200-$250 in the
    general market.

On and on. The N95 is a fool's choice, (see Mark Crispin) it's just not
a product a serious tech person would ever consider, the specs just
don't measure up to the iPhone.
