I have a colossal amount of text messages on my Nokia N96 in various folders
(4000+ messages). There's so many in one folder that my phone can't handle
showing me the messages, so it asks to delete them.
How do I access the message storage location via PC, so I can either copy
the messages to my computer, or at least view them?
Thanks.

Either connect the N96 in mass storage or temporarily extract the SD card
and plug it in as a drive (better).
Then use the windows explorer to reorganise the messages into manageable
folders, delete stale ones etc. before returning the chip to the phone.
A relatively straightforward way to partition would be by date with messages
in folders of months in quarters or years e.g.

Re: Remote Access Text Message N96
The text messages are stored to the phone memory drive of the phone.
Connecting in mass storage mode only shows the mass memory drive. Connected
in PC Suite mode, which shows both. Looked through every folder on both
drives, can't find any with 4000 files in it. I'm assuming they will be
individual files? Tried opening a few .dat files and "no extension" files
with notepad, the recognisable bits of text weren't part of any messages.
Thanks for the advice though. Do you have any other ideas? Or is there a
specific folder I should be looking in/for?

I did suggest using Nokia Photos. Did you consider that, because it
seems it will do exactly what you're trying to achieve?
Nokia Photos will read the text messages off your phone and archive
them on your computer sorting them into a conveniently viewable
timeline. You can browse back through the timeline to view the older
messages, or search for particular numbers or pieces of text.

Oh really? I thought you were joking. Didn't think a photo tool would have
anything to do with messages. Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

Re: Remote Access Text Message N96
Sorry I thought that with that many messages you must have had them all on
the SD card. It is certainly where I put all my photos. music etc.
Not sure if you can make the phone memory mass storage (or if you would want
to - an accident could kill the phone.
Try backing it all off, sorting it out in the back up and then restoring.
