Navigation on N Series

When I look on Nokia's web site
http://www.nokia.co.uk/services-and-...maps/downloads
it does not list my phone (N79) as one capable of running navigation, but
when I recently [had to] upgrade to v3 in order to get maps for France and
Spain it replaced the existing software in the phone and "appears" to have
installed the full navigation suite complete with "drive to" and "walk to"
navigation with voice instructions etc.

Anyway that I can be certain what has happened?

Hi

I take it the firmware on your phone has been upgraded and so have your ovi
maps + navigation.

Nokia has provided new nokias thats being shipped out with full navigation.

If your lucky to have a phone that can be upgraded ( the firmware ) and
support full navigation then thats a bonus. Plus free voice guide downloads
in most languages and maps....

I dont know how loong you have used the gps on your nokia but it supports
A-GPS and standalone gps. A-GPS uses your phones operator to recieve a
much better position fix rather than just using a satalite signal. If you
have a good data plan than that will make it much cheaper. You can also
wi-fi signal too. I dont know how good france and spain are with wi-fi but
its possible.. If you use wi-fi then signal drops. your nokia will tell you
taht the signals lost then switch to your operators signal but of course if
your overseas then data roaming come into effect then higher charges are
applied.

Or you can use the stand alone gps with only usings a satalie signal then
you do need good line of sight for a position fix.....

seem to use roads for walk 2. I am fed up with Vodafone being evasive
about upgrades they have no intention of releasing and horrendous
problems with Nokia software on my Windows 7 64 bit PC. New phone and
contract next month :-)

Hallo

i remember my n86 from orange.. Once i got my phone, i debranded it and
installed a new language pack onto it.

Only problem with that is, the FM transmitter option is no longer in my
menu. From what am told, the country i was using it has banned fm
transmission from mobile phones.

Bonus for me was Orange gaving me the unlock code (?0) after just having
the phone for little over 5 weeks.. Now i see on the website it now states
you have to wait 3 months.

apart from that and new added language.. phone works great

Yes I recently upgrade the Nav' soft/firmware and it seems to have upgraded
to beyond the level it says is possible on the web-site (i.e. the N79 is not
lists as a phone that can have "free" navigation, even though functionally
it is the same as the N97 (which can).

No it allows an intermediate fix pending GPS resolution and allows much
faster first fix from a cold or warm start (15-20s typically on Nokia - many
minutes on my Blackberry)

That is the really BIG advantage of the Nokia over Blackberry - the maps are
in the phone, so no need to be in coverage and no need for data charges
(e.g. when abroad). In the UK I am on unlimited data and sometimes use
Google Maps instead.

It seems not to be that fussy. I did a comparison with my BMW. Sat on the
central console it easily matched the car for accuracy, despite the fact
that the car has an external antenna and also uses the ABS sensors to work
out how far and which way the car is going (OTOH it was built to work off
c/a signal only).

There is an option in "walk to" for straight line or roads only. Be careful
in urban areas or it will have you walking through people's houses and
gardens.

Vodafone branded phones until they had been tested. This went on and on
until they finally were forced to admit they were not supporting or
would allow release of updates for the Vodafone branded N86.
