I have been on O2 for a couple of years and had my Nokia N86 8MB for over a
    year.

Suddenly last month while I was abroad, my texts started resending over and
over until one of the recipients called to tell me and I cleared my Outbox
    to stop it,

I assumed that was an 02/Partner Service Provider (AT&T) thing, reported i
when I got home and o2 say they will only investigate it once that month's
bill has been issued (so I have diaried it to remind them).

Now again, last night, when I'm back in the UK it has happened again.

A friend has received over 200 repeat messages from me until I picked up HIS
message and cancelled it from my Outbox.

So this one is wholly within the UK. AGAIN, I have to diary it to remind o"
about the incident only once my May bill has been issued :-(((

Any ideas how I stop it happening again?

I'm also concerned how many repeats go unreported if it resets after, say,
20 texts per message. It'd soon eats up even MY allowance, which is pretty
    big.

Pretty strange. Do you have the option for delivery reports turned on?
If the report shows up as pending for a long time after sending a
message, it could indicate network congestion. Since your phone worked
fine for a year and assuming you haven't installed anything else that
could cause this, it might not be a phone problem..perhaps the phone is
unable to confirm the message was successfully sent and so resends it?

No, the way I know there is a problem is that people tell me THEN, when I
check, I see them still in my Outbox, saying "resend in...." alongside
(regardless of the fact that it has already BEEN sent several times).

    I have installed NO extras.

It could be the phone intermittently does not confirm its sending by an
outgoing message (if indeed it does that?), but my suspicion is that it
happens because the network (O2) doesn't send my phone "message received"
    signals.

    Does that make sense?

Just a thought, is your "sent messages" folder pretty full? I know my phone
does odd things if I don't remember to empty the various folders.

I suppose it's remotely possible that your phone stops sending a message
once it's appeared in the "Sent" folder. If it's full, it might keep
resending. You've got nothing to lose (other than old messages) by deleting
    all the old ones.

Good thought. I just had a look.

My SENT folder has 80 messages in it now. It would have been around 60-65
    when it happened.

My INBOX now has 63 messages in, so it would have been about 50 then, I
    suppose

I do clear my mailboxes out approx weekly, but have once or twice found one
box or another had a little over 100 messages in it.

I never have more that 300 messages in IN, SENT, TEMP plus SAVED, and I
    don't use templates.

What's the maximum total messages that can be stored on an N86, can someone
    say?

I've seen this problem with sending multimedia messages - they remain
stuck in my N8's outbox, and get resent a couple of times until I delete
them from the outbox. Never heard of it affecting text messages though.
Looks like a bug..you could try reinstalling the firmware.

Well, if you store them on the internal memory, it can wind up getting
full. Check how much free space is left on it, otherwise set it to store
    messages on your memory card.

    -------------------------------------
A typical 432 call takes 982 cycles plus 40 memory

    Thanks, I will.

O2/Carphone Warehouse have offered to test my SIM card in another phone, but
as it's an intermittent fault, I can't see how that is going to help me.

Latest update on my "resending texts" problem:

Having had two months in which my bill has been inflated by the
(acknowledged By Carphone Warehouse) repeated resending of text messages via
my O2 account with them, and no credit back being applied by the company, I
took my phone into their Ipswich store to have "the SIM" checked as they had
    advised me to do.

I had been told by Carphone Warehouse Customer Service that any store could
check my phone, whereas the Ipswich store claimed that they were the only
store in East Anglia with technically qualified staff on site.

    Is that true, I wonder?

Anyway, having left the phone (with the SIM removed at their request) with
them for an hour to "check it, and flash it with the latest software
version", they gave it back to me, saying they had applied the latest
software version. I asked whether they had found any faults and they evaded
a direct answer yes or no, simply saying they had "reflashed it with the
    latest software version" (again)

Well, my phone still has the 20.115.229.01 of 1st October 2009 that it had
before and, by way of confirmation that they didn't so much as breathe on
it, none of my data or settings were wiped while it was in their care.

So it seems nothing on the phone has changed though, when I went through
Customer Service to complain that I appeared to be getting a run-around from
the company, the best they could offer was that a supervisor would get back
    to me "within 72 hours."

Am I being unreasonable, or are Carphone Warehouse the inefficient bunch I'm
    thinking they are?

    It's a cruel coincidence! :-))

I thought the message hadn't made it to the newsgroup and *I* resent it.

Not a thing I have done with a text message for at least a couple of years.

No, the phone problem is a real one, and they STILL haven't got back to me.
Still, they did say it could be up to 72 hours before anyone would... :-\\

Still no call from Carphone Warehouse.

I'm thinking I'll send a formal letter of complaint if I don't hear by
    tomorrow morning.

Can someone please confirm (or not) that reflashing should have wiped out my
data and settings, because I don't believe it WAS flashed in the store on
