Would everyone still recommend buying this phone a year and half later
or are there better alternatives now? Also I'm thinking about buying my
phone on ebay and then doing pay as you go. What's the best carrier for
pay as you go for this phone for UK residents, especially for
international travelers? Also does the skype work on pay as you go when
    traveling abroad? Thanks.

Couldn't tell you about the carriers since I'm not from Europe, but the
N900 was the first and last of its kind
If you're specifically looking for a fully capable Linux based pocket
computer, this is your only option if you can still find it (or you
might wait for the recently announced N9, which also runs a half
finished version of Meego, but bear in mind that this does not have a
    physical keyboard).

If you are looking at a touchscreen + physical keyboard form factor and
want a Nokia device, the E7 is your most modern bet - it's ultra slim,
has a 4" AMOLED display that's clear in bright sunlight, and has all the
enterprise grade connectivity features you might want - corporate email,
calendaring, security features like remote locking, etc.

    Dunno, but look at N8.

    Probably 3, but UMTS only.

May do. Local SP's may block VOIP if they can and in any event the data is
    often exhorbitant.
