newbie !!!

I have a Logo Manager/ringtones for my 3310 and the correct lead - so i
plug this into the serial port, do i plug the phone charger into the phone
at the same time or do i need a separate power source ??

how do i make the PC know that i have plugged the lead into the com port ?

Most people find a charged battery an adequate power source.

You can inform logomanager by setting the correct details in Tool -> Options

you wont need a seperate power source, the phone will run off the battery
power.
your pc should automatically detect that the phone is connected if the
software is installed properly.
Go to Tools>Options and look under communications to ensure that the right
COM port is specified etc. Also you will need to speciy a network, which is
also in Options.

You will know that Logomanager has detected the phone as it will say so in
the status bar.
