I just came back from a local SprintPCS store. I wanted to buy the Sanyo
5400. I was told $300. $300 is way too much for a cell phone. I asked why I
couldn't get the phone for $150 like. I was told I didn't own my current
phone longer then 18 months and I'm not a new customer. I've been with
SprintPCS for at least 4 years and with number portability in place now I
don't understand how SprintPCS can try to charge their subscribers with no
contracts an extra $150. Is there something I'm missing? This doesn't make
    business sense.

I've been with them just about 5 years and they said the same thing to me. I
have to pay full price to upgrade my phone as well. It just makes us
consumers to leave them for being idiots. Once SprintPCS get ya, they
apparently don't care after that. Greedy people aren't they?

It really doesn't make any sense. If more people bought the RL phones that
would plan upgrades for some, which means more money for SprintPCS. If the
would off the phones for $200 to their excisting customer base with a 2 year
contract they basically stop people from leaving with the WLNP. I don't see
the business sense in keeping the price at $300 for excisting customer out
    of their contract???

No problem- read a couple of mine real close sometime.

THe pricing doesn't make any real sense, which makes me wonder if they are
trying to bring it online at a slower rate than cheaper phones would allow.
It is possible that they want to insure that the network can handle the
additional load, and a slow buildup will identify capacity problems in a
more efficient manner than a sudden wave of users.

Of course, the other scenario is that they're trying to get every penny they
can- these types of things are always cheaper after the novelty wears off.

can you get around it by getting a new service under a new number? (then
terminate the old number). I know it's a hassle but it may be worth savings
if you really want the new phone!

I want to hold on to my current number. I guess I'm going to have to hold
off till SprintPCS realizes the $300 is way too much when other providers
are selling PTT/DC phones $50 to $100 less. I'm on Scott's page in this
book, i think over pricing the phone was the only way they could think off
to do a soft launch out of the lab test.

So just how long has your current phone been on that account? My
Wife's phone qualifies, but my phone that I added to the account later
does not. Even though it is an older phone and been in service longer,
although on a different account through my old job.

I got my N400 back in March 2003 when my LG5250 wouldn't display anything on
the screen. I initially took it to a SprintPCS store back was adviced to
take it to Costco so I can do an upgrade.

So you have had that phone for around 8 months, not 18, and you
are not adding a new line of service, therefore you do not qualify.
Remember that what is charged retail is not the full cost of the phone.

It kinda does, actually. If you think that phone actually costs Sprint
$150, you're kidding yourself. Sprint is subsidizing the cost of the
phone to attract new customers, meaning they lose money with every
customer acquisition in the hopes that the customer's monthly billing
revenue will offset that loss over the life of their contract. This is
also why you have to wait 18 months to take advantage of the lower
price... if you were to keep buying phones at the promo price sooner
than 18 months each time, Sprint would continually lose money having you
    as a customer.

IIRC, even the $300 price is still reflecting a partial subsidy from
Sprint, meaning it may cost them even more than $300 to buy those phones
from Sanyo. Believe it or not, cell phones aren't cheap... we just
think they are, because phone subsidies are common practice among cell
    carriers in the US.

No, and I wouldn't. Thier information is not accurate. According to
their site, SunCom/AT&T are offering a CDMA phone, Verizon is offering a
Motorla GSM phone, and Cingular is offering a TDMA phone with GPRS
capability. Almost like the story that a Verizon sales rep told me
about how Verizon allows its customers to roam on Nextel, but Nextel
will not allow its customers to roam on Verizon. Next thing I know is
that the Unites States scraps all digital wireless coverage.
