Couldn't find a single phone I liked

So I was in a bad position. Middle of a contract with an old phone.
My wife had used a Qualcomm 2760 for three years, and over 12,000
call-minutes. The original battery was dying.

So we started at a Radio Shack. They introduced us to a quiet deal
where you can get a new phone for the current discounted price (free
to $150) if you commit to another two years. They had a display
Samsung a500. This appeared to be a great phone. Color screen, lots
of features, no camera. But, it's discontinued. Can't get one except
on eBay.

The Nokia i3588 is thicker than the old Qualcomm. The refurbished
Samsung 460's were out of stock, and all the rest were expensive and
bulky camera phones. I'm sorry but it's a phone. You talk on it. I
don't have need for a 1/4 megapixel crappy camera, polyphonic ring
tones, interchangable face plates or silly games. I just want a
phone.

On to the Sprint store. Same deal, same problems. Bulky over
featured phones, the fat Nokia, and they're down to their last Samsung
460 which the salesguy slams as problematic.

Then from behind the counter comes the LG 1200 "well you could go with
this". To him, it's full of compromises, doesn't support analog
roaming, no color screen, no ringtones, and old technology. To us,
it's tiny, perfect, just what we wanted, and free after rebate.

Why can't Sprint offer at least one color non-vision, noncrap phone?

Why would you want a color phone if you don't have Vision (or a camera)?

Considering you don't like the current line of phones, and apparently liked
the 2760, have you considered getting a new battery? SPCS is offering an
extended battery for $60.

You may find less expensive batteries, either slim or extended, doing a
search on the net.

You can also do a search through eBay on prior less featureless SPCS phones
....

One thing more to add & say to Zypher. It's no big deal to get a Vision
capable phone, and not sign on for that optional service. If you just want
to use it as a phone, more power to you. As to Vision, SPCS is offering it
free for two months to try out. If you don't like what it can offer you, you
can cancel that option.

Personally, once you start checking out the Vision features, you probably
won't want to cancel the option.

Sprint DOES require you switch to a Vision capable plan (it is still F&C
from what I can see). You do not have to activate Vision however. It is
required because they must provision the phone on the data network. This
DOES reset your plan to a new one year agreement minimum.

Two months ago, shortly after my advantage agreement ran out, I talked
Retention into authorizing a $100 new phone rebate. Then I replaced
my old non-Vision phone with a new Samsung VGA1000. My plan
agreement expiration date was not reset. This may have been because the
phone change was prior to the new provision making existing customers
routinely eligible for rebates.

Because color phones are cool and look nice.
I have a color phone,never use 'vision',no camera and I like it that way.
I like the big LCD clock - One helluva lot easier to read than the old
ones.
Also,it doubles as a low intensity flashlight when fumbling for keys ect.

I don't mind some useful features such as a calculator, enhanced
phonebook or calendar. I like a big, bright screen like everyone
else. I just found it odd that they are pushing Vision to the point
of almost forcing it, hiding "regular" phones behind the counter for
those of us that push the point rather than follow the crowd I guess.

We kicked around getting a battery for the 2760, but just decided to
go with something newer and smaller. Since this was free after rebate
it was actually cheaper than a battery or a phone off eBay (I looked
there too, and didn't want to hassle with "is the ESN clear?" issues)

Along with computers, I support Sprint phones at work, including the
new Samsung i600. The web browser, while handy, is still limited and
I'm just not willing to pay for it.

Well, my 5150 is color and I don't have Vision 8-). I do have, and Use
the old WW added however.

When will they start selling the i600? It looks interesting, (though it
unfortunately doesn't do AMPs). How does it compare in overall feel to,
say, the Sanyo RL 2500?

But I thought you wanted a phone that was a phone, not something that
went for the cool factor.

Seriously though, it looks like the market for "just phones" has all but
dried up. You may however, get lucky if you try eBay. There are still
some older color screen phones, like the non-Vision Sanyo 5000's and
5150's of yesteryear that are in good condition (some even claim to be
in-box and unopened) that you could probably activate.

Or you could just get a Vision phone and not activate Vision. Just
because the feature is there doesn't mean you have to use it.

Oops! Got ahead of myself, I meant i500. We've had i300, i330's and
now the i500, which I think is the holy grail...a compact flip Palm

I'm not the OP of this thread - I have a 4900 and am satisfied with that at
the moment.
I am a confirmed gadget fiend,and don't mind features at all,but when it
comes to cell phones I am primarily concerned with its performance as a
phone,and not as a cheesy camera, mini laptop or gaming platform.
The only non phone feature I use often is the voice recorder.
