hey all....i've had sprint for a few years now, and i've noticed that
usually i get a bad reception indoors, no matter where i am...i have a
TP2200....but recently i've moved to boston (downtown) and it's sometimes
even worse when i'm in my apartment...is this a matter of location, or
physical phone? or is it just sprint's network, because i've heard other
people say this too....
thanks...
p.s. i'm thinking about getting a new (flip) phone...any of them have really
good reception, and all the necessary features, etc.? thanks again...

There are a number of factors John. Whether you are in a fringe area, high
usage in the area, inside, your phone and a number of other things.

You didn't list what your necessary feature requirements are. In saying
that, the Sanyo line of phones always gets the highest marks in this
newsgroup.

the basic stuff i should have said.....is samsung good as well?

Yes, however in saying that, for those of us that have both, (I use a Sanyo
5300 and my daughter a Samsung A-500), it seems I get a better signal in
fringe areas than my daughter does.

1) "..usually i get a bad reception indoors, no matter where i am..." - You
might want to get some documentation on the features/limitation of hte
1900Mhz/CDMA technology that is used...
BUT....
2) I(we) HAD Samsung 3500's for years and always blamed reception problems
on the 'network', Recently we have swapped out these phones for the SANYO
5300's ..WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Even though the 3500's where performing
correctly(Tested multiple times!). simply changing to the new phones has
DRAMTICALLY improved service.. Very, very few dropped calls... Almost
perfect sound... Never "Searching for Service". Calls now get through..etc
etc etc...
3) I like the 5300 . It does, in honesty have some 'detractors'. Some
comment about 'data speed'..Some comment about other features. I however.
had the 5300 recommended it to me, but multiple people over the 8100 and any
other picture phone, or for that matter most other dual-band PCS phones
available as of 10/15/03.

Re: reception indoors...
Since SprintPCS is saddled with 1900 MHz frequency for its CDMA, all
other things being equal (i.e. distance to tower, Power output of
tower, useage of tower) SprintPCS will lose every time, as the higher
the frequency, the poorer the penetration.
Thus everything else being equal an 800 MHz CDMA or a 900 MHz GSM
signal will tend to do much better inside a building. Changing the
model phone is likely to have less of an effect than changing a
carrier.

Re: reception indoors...
My Wife's phone is also an Eagle 2200. It is a matter of
location. It is not the intent of wireless companies to provide
coverage inside buildings, unless the building owner pays the big bucks
for a repeater/antenna system and it's installation. There is not even
any guaranty that wireless carriers will be able to provide coverage
everywhere outside in the market they have launched. Buildings,
topography, interference sources, zoning laws, no land owner willing to
lease, etc. can limit coverage.
